Foam Over Air Filter To Make It Quiet
Anyone here ever try it? I've got the air filter right on the turbo and it's loud as hell. I guess some people like it but I don't. My car looks stock and sounds stock till I open the throttle, and then all you hear is the intake. I read on m.net a good bit (a lot) and a few there put some foam over their air filter and said it makes the intake much quieter and didn't hurt power. FM even dyno'd it and said the foam made no difference in power, and someone else dyno'd it and got the same results.
My biggest concern is that all these folks had cold air intakes. On mine the filter is slide right on the turbo. So if I wrap it in foam it will be subjected to higher temperatures. I worry it could catch on fire. It will probably be fine I guess.
I already bought some foam, just hesitant to put it on. Maybe I'll put a piece in the toaster oven and see how hot it has to get before it catches fire.
Am I the only one that thinks the intake is too loud? Or am I the only one that wants a quiet car?

I didn't like it either but mine is BEGI and had the air box around it. I lined the inside of the airbox with heat shield fabric. (no I didn't seal it in or restrict air movement, just bolted fabric on to the flat metal sides) That little bit of fabric made a big difference in dampening the noise. I doubt a foam filter will help. You need to elbow it into an air box of some sort if you want to quiet it down any. That or turn up the stereo!

Guess I should have put this on m.net....
I'm unsure what I'm gonna try. Guess I could try it with a cold engine and see how well it works first. If it works well then go from there.
I may be way over-analyzing it. Hell, they do sell foam air filters.

Check to verify that your manifold ->turbo bolts are tight. Mine were backing out ever so slightly and that tiny bit of air that could get out magnified the intake sound under throttle a huge amount..
