slave cylinder

Failed 6 miles from my home. Limped it back. These things fail every year on me.

I couldn't find my spare cylinder, so I asked a friend who works at a dealer in Atlanta to pick a rebuild kit up for me. And luckily they happened to have one in stock.

Slave cylinder FTL

I have the same issue, I replace them every year before inspection time now. If there is enough interest I happen to have the design for a billet unit started, all I really have to do is send the prints to my custom seal guy and tell him how long I want it to last and call the CNC shop in Morgan City.

whatever you do, don't design a coolant reroute spacer.

Sure, let me just pull this fucker out of my ass since I don't have the time to beg a machine shop to do it:

Just curious..

What clutch are you running?

Do you figure it may have an impact on the slave's useful life?

Have you been using the OE replacements or aftermarket?

confused...its too hard for someone of your stature to call up Moss motors, and ask for X part number? likewise, you can't call BEGi and ask the same?

I still have to cut a groove for the t-stat and thread that bitch. I ordered the moss part

I've never changed mine. This post will jinx me though.

7 years with a ACT HD or whatever the 307ft/lb clutch combo is.

I wonder if flushing your fluid often helps clean out the grit and prevent wear.

Stealth97 07-26-2008 09:32 PM

I have had to change mine 4 times in the nearly 8 years I have owned the car. Once it left me stranded. I had been using cheap replacements, now I have a Mazda one.

Nitroracer 07-27-2008 01:10 AM

I was halfway home from work on friday when I had to start limping my car home. I thought the slave had gone out so I ordered a new one and when I got in there I could see it had been replaced and wasn't leaking. Getting up early tomorrow to put a new master cylinder in! :|

MX_Eva 07-27-2008 03:25 AM

tuesday I'm putting in a new master and slave. Ordered from mazda, only the slave went but with the car as old as it is and contaminants I'd rather replace both.

No, it's failed with the stock clutch too.

aftermarket complete cylinders or Mazda oem rebuild kits in the oem cylinder (I keep a spare non oem, just can't find it right now)

Theory makes sense, but my cylinder, hence fluid, is roughly 1 yr old. :dunno:

drained, flushed, refilled the whole system? til the blue ran amber, etc?

I dunno, maybe it's just shitty manufacturing.

Arkmage 07-27-2008 12:39 PM

it's the choice of materials they used... the cylinder is too porous and accelerates the seal wear. It also should have had a glide ring on the piston due to the misalignment it gets.

No, not that paranoid. Just a simple dump then fill. Perhaps that is the difference. Perhaps not. :dunno:
I just picked up the rebuild kit from my friend in Atlanta, and when the sun goes down a little bit I'll go make it happen.

I hate starting any project sunday evening, no matter the scope. Wish me luck.

Ben 07-27-2008 07:57 PM

The seal on the piston in the slave went bad. Replaced it with the piston, spring, and boot from the mazda rebuild kit. Car drives again. Easy repair, but a PITA. Kind of ruined the weekend (had a planned drive I missed today due to lack of part).

Matt, the fluid was still nice looking. I topped it off and bled with fluid from the same bottle I used last summer. In retrospect, I should have picked up a fresh bottle due to age. Oh well.
