Can you flip your soft top without getting out of your car and have it fold back perfectly? If you can't like me, the problem is most likely the two springs on the soft top on both left and the right side of the top.
The springs are located right around the level of your left ear if you are sitting in the drivers seat and right ear in the pax seat.
The part numbers from Mazda are: NCY0-R1-191 and NCY0-R1-192. They are labeled R and L probably for drivers side and pax side. I ordered the springs from Trussville Mazda and IIRC they were around $35 shipped.
The springs are a heavier gauge than the ones that I replaced and hopefully will last just as long.
The replacement is so easy and self-explanatory that it's almost not even worth mentioning. But, I used a generic blunt-nosed pliers to remove and to replace the springs and the whole procedure took about 15 minutes.
Now I can just flick the top back like I was meant to be able to do.

except they were backordered a day. I got them today and did it in about 2 minutes per side without any tools. they were indeed heavier gauge than the 01 top springs. seems to work so far!

The only thing keeping me from ordering these springs is knowing i'm going on spring break tomorrow and that me being able to simply lift the rod that the springs push forward works for now. When the next check comes in the mail i'll have to get some though.
Interesting, my NB doesn't appear to have any springs, and it's always been annoying to put the top up/dn. Can somebody post a picture of where they go to see if anything else is missing?

when the top is up, they're by your ear on a little tab thing. the bar it moves is the first one above the window. you should be able to move that one back and forth--the springs go essentially at the pivot of that bar.

Well, it seems my top is still binding occasionally when I throw back the top. So, I just sprayed a bit of PB Blaster on all of the soft top pivot joints and THAT seems to have done the trick. I'm sure you can use other lubricants, but PB Blaster was the best I had on hand.
Make sure you use a rag to wrap around where you're spraying as PB Blaster really stinks! Also, spray some on the pivot points inside the body of the car where the water drains are. IIRC, there are two pivot points.
One more reminder - PB Blaster STINKS!!! But it works.

Also if you wipe down the support top of the rod that the springs actually push upwards own with some armorall like product or anything else slippery it will help it slide against the soft top some if it has collected any dirt or grime.
It will also help negate the PB stench.

I don't see why it would be bad persay but I do see why it could be very inconvenient having to do all the lifting when putting down the top inorder to allow the glass window to fall flat. I have the springs and still have to push the rod up a little, or pull the window down, either way works.
