I think I'm getting old because I've found myself getting very tired of a loud car all the time. I found several reviews of people using Peel & Seal, a roof patching material, as an alternative to dynamat. It's apparently very similar, available at Lowes and significantly cheaper.
I figured I'd share incase others were interested in dampening some of the road/exhaust noise. I did under the carpet and the trunk with 4 6"x25' rolls ($75). It really seemed to quiet the car a good bit. I'm thinking about buying another roll or 2 to do the doors. I want to do this to my daily. I did it to my Jetta when I was a car audio ****** and it was super quiet.

I did that with McMaster.com dynamat-alike ("mastic mat"), and also added a layer of bubble wrap. The effect was very significant.

I also learned that you don't have to cover it from head to toe, just put a square or chunk on each piece of metal and you will get a significant reduction in noise. You don't have to cover it compelete to damp it.

In proper m.net form where every lb counts, how much does four 25' rolls weigh?
Not that it matters when I will have 300WHP to drag me along but inquiring minds...especially considering that the V8 is a bit louder than the old turbo 4. |

Check out the product QuietCar. You paint it on which for some is easier than the dynamat-alike stuff.
I painted teh wheel wells of my beater Acuronda and the effect was noticeable. |
I use truck bed liner in my altima, it never cured :( the above is Fat Mat, cheap on eBay.

The RX7 guys have done a fair bit of the quiet car stuff. It's pretty light. One guy did the whole underbody of his car and some parts inside and recorded a 20db reduction in noise.

I did my whole FXT with Raammat which has done well in tests and is one of the most name brand affordable materials. On top of that I used closed cell foam for more deadening.
While you can apply small parts to kill resonance, putting on a complete layer like pdexta does a much better job at killing road noise and exhaust drone which isn't resonance as much as it is simple db. |

Look up sounddeadenershowdown, I think that guy has the best, most objective information on this subject and I trust his system the most of everything I looked at.
As mentioned in this thread already, the dynamat stuff is just to cut down on resonating panels, and you only need about 25% coverage to achieve that, the rest is just dead weight. The real luxery car style quiet comes from a sound barrier, like MLV, which is what they use to make sound booths in studios and the like sealed off, which you can buy off ebay from studio supply guys for much cheaper than any other source. Stuff is HEAVY however. I'm using that very system on my VW project many of you have heard about, the MLV is suspended above a thermal barrier. I want that car cool and quiet. |
