STI trans are (were) pretty pricey and you had to swap the rear to the R180 from the STI too. To do that you needed the whole rear/axles/driveshaft. You can see where this is going. $$$ Probably about $4500 if I did it myself. Or I could have gone with a PPG gearset which was around $4500 plus installation.
I'd much rather **** away money ( a lot more) on my Miata conversion.
While I loved my FXT and it drove very civilized for a daily driver, the EWG was annoying though I could have plumbed it back in and it simply wasn't fun like the Miata is. Plus the only time I'd drive it over the Miata is during the winter or crappy weather where I couldn't use half the power I had.
If anyone wants a nice car, hang around me for a year and I'll build something sweet then sell it before I abuse it or break it!

The 2.5 shortblock is getting some 2.0 heads and going into an 04 wagon with a huge rotated turbo and frontmount. Then we'll finish off that weak POS tranny fo good.

Ok 18psi - so what did it cost for that kind of power? Nothing to be ashamed of- everybody here knows that it's gonna cost to make that kind of power from a turbo four banger (and have it live). But I think it would put it in perspective - going from stock power to that level.
I had about $6K in my FXT which included suspension, wheels, stereo. Probably a high 11 second car. Weakest part of the FXT was the trans (which was why I never tracked it). The STI trans are relatively bulletproof:

Hell we just sold an STi Trans w/12k for 3900$.. That was the transmission and nothing else. Got 750 from the EJ25 heads alone!!

friend of mine with a 06 sti has a aps setp running 390whp on pump gas around 450 whp on 115, tuned by scott seagle at topspeed in marietta. thing runs like a champ. 314 is impressive considering the same guy with the sti has a 04 with sti turbo, thicker ic, downpipe, sittin around 250 whp. i definately wouldnt mess with his sti unless i was pushing near 300rwhp lol

Yeah I agree.. Thats also another one of my complaints about the MS6 and its zip-tie & duct tape rear differential. Not to mention the transfer case that bolts onto a standard fwd transmission output.
I've a couple buddies with Evos but haven't seen one of them blow a gearbox yet.. They're too busy popping the motors. Like Scott said, a thrown rod is the mark of a true tuner.

little restrictor pill in the clutch line preventing them from dropping the clutch TOO hard, making them burn them like crazy....as soon as someone dares take the restrictor out, the transfer case ***** on itself withing weeks (with hard driving)...........

The morning my miata got totaled, I walked away from my friends STI. He had a turbo back, FMIC, COB, and a few more goodies. He was making like 15-16 lbs. at the time.
I just got my car re-tuned and it was running strong. I was happy to finally race him with a good tune to show him what the miata could really do.
We went from about 40 roll. I was in 2nd gear and took it up to the top of 3rd. By the time I let off I was like 6 cars on him (he didn't miss any gears and isn't a bad driver).
I picked up a 1991 MR2 recently with a fully built motor and a TD06-17c turbo running 15 lbs. of boost. Car made 320 whp and it could take a C6 ( no a Z06 C6, the 400 hp C6). Motor could have taken up to somewhere close to 500 whp. The injectors were the limiting factor. Only 550's....
That car is being sold ATM actually. It was a bitch to DD (retarded low and alcohol injection was expensive to refill).
Ya a 220-250 whp miata will spank a stock STI. Should still hang with them even with a turboback, cobb, and intake.
Sorry for the long post.

tuning is key on those cars. 15-16lbs of boost on a stg2 sti is WEAK SAUSE (stock is 14), not to mention that unless its protuned, a cobb accessport provides some of the mildest maps out there.....its nothing. even a ots flash will get the car to push more psi, so i dunno how fast, if at all, the sti you are talking about was.
my 05 wrx with turboback and tune at 18psi did 13.1@102 on 91 octane, what does a 220whp miata trap on average to be able to spank that?(the 07 is in the 11's)...keep in mind this is a wrx with a td04, a stg2 sti is EASILY capable of 12.8@103-5 which my friend, a mediocre driver did on his 05. see guys, i dont want to start a rivalry here, but c'mon lets be reasonable: go on nasioc and pull up the thread with stock turbo wrx's and sti and look at the numbers they are running at the track: stock turbo with boltons and a 100oct tune the record right now is 11.7@114 for a stock turbo sti. stock turbo and boltons on a wrx and they're in the mid-high 12's area. with bigger turbo's its game over. c'mon lets be reasonable here. imo, a BONE STOCK sti is a good race for a turboed miata (given its a average 220-250whp) from a roll, anything can happen on the street, but majority of the time its that way.
just cause you "took a sti" one or two times doesnt mean that its that way always. we've got stage 2 sti's in the bay area running low 12's back to back at 112mph on **** 91 oct. anyways, this is just my input, i am going from the subaru world to the miata world and am happy to do so, but i just cant ingnore one fact: subaru's will always dominate miata's in a straight line majority of the time. some miata's are crazy beasts, but not alot. most are made for the twisties,. Im not arguing the fact that miata's are funner, better handling, etc etc etc..stricktly my opinion/input tho so dont get offended plz
