Stupid nut size for stupid PPF bolt

So I just pulled my motor and tranny and put it back.

The PPF bolts onto the diff with two bolts.

The rearmost bolt does not thread into anything so I assume some stupid nut is supposed to hold onto it place where it pokes out above the diff.

What is the size of that stupid nut? They didn't have that shizat at home depot.

Side queszation. What is the tip/trick to get the shifter to sit in the middle of the shifter hole. My shifter is kinda sitting towards the driver's side which feels kinda wierd.

FRT_Fun 01-21-2012 06:43 PM

The tip for getting the shifter to sit in the middle is to correctly install your engine and transmission. I don't see how it could not be centered. There may be a bit of adjustment in the PPF if you loosen the bolts, adjust the trans whichever way, and then tighten while someone holds it in place. But there can't be whole lot of play in there.

You sure your engine mounts aren't sitting on something? Did you use the engine mount "cover" things?

As for the PPF, I thought that "nut" was part of the PPF. As in, welded to it. Or at least press fit.

There is a nut for the frontmost bolt. Not the rear.

Just for you, Faeflora, I'm going outside in this 5F weather to check on this and get you a picture. BRB.

FRT_Fun 01-21-2012 06:59 PM

Also why did you remove the PPF at the diff?

blaen99 01-21-2012 07:03 PM

Yeah, Faeflora, you are mixed up bro after looking at how my PPF was.

Reverse of this.

?????? OK well the way my ---- is, the rearmost bolt does not screw into anything.

Take bolt to your nearest hardware store,
Test nuts,
Profit

Only solution you've got then, bro. Unless you plan on ordering them online and waiting several days for them at least, you'll have to go to the hardware store anyways.

Okay, my sense of humor failed to come across on the internet (No tone of voice to reflect sarcasm ftl), and I do apologize for failing to express that in my previous post.

Fae, there are special nuts on the PPF. They have specialized splined collars to inset into it/fit into the PPF. You won't find them at a hardware store. They are specialized Mazda nuts for the specific PPF application. However, they also take a good deal of force to remove - they are, as another poster mentioned, basically "welded" into the PPF because of how they fit. I cannot imagine how you got them out and misplaced them - if you removed them, you would have had to have worked at it with a hammer at least as they are press-fit with a splined collar. This is what FRT and I have been getting at in this thread.

FRT_Fun 01-21-2012 08:30 PM

Are you sure you are using the correct bolts?

yeah I just took my PPF off a week ago. There are two nuts on each bolt that must come out to remove the PPF from the rear diff. They have a shoulder on them that goes into the PPF...a regular ol nut might work but it will be THE SUCK. Don't do it. Find the correct nut.

dstn2bdoa 01-21-2012 11:22 PM

Call me crazy, but aren't the pressed nuts clearly visible in the picture he just posted? I'm not at home to check, but I did this not to long ago. If I remember right one bolt is larger than the other and this was important in putting it together.

Faeflora 01-22-2012 12:40 AM

I think hey are all the same diameter

Per the link, "the bolt closest to the diff simply screws out". Mine slides inand out. No screwing. Ha

Both bolts on the differential side have "press-in" nuts. The 2 nuts are identical as far as I know. So you have one but lost the other.

You should have told me last week since I was at a junk yard pulling a diff.

Anyways, as far as I know they aren't sold separate of the PPF.

viperormiata 01-22-2012 12:52 AM

Why do you break the stupidest sh!t

Probably everyone did stupid ---- at one point. We just didn't make a thread about it

Faeflora 01-22-2012 01:14 AM

OMFG if i lost that ---- well fuc that. I cannot gay out and skip this ----. I broke my old ppf at 250hp so i dunwanna f around on this now. Arrrgggggg

Thing is if there is indeed a press in threaded nut thing, it would have to go into the diff at the top. There is no room as it is tight fit on the bottom.

Im gonna use any old fukin bolt and nut that will sorta fit if i cannot get thi shi figured out

curly 01-22-2012 01:14 AM

Are they all the same length? Is that front bolt that's already in perhaps a bit longer and supposed to go in the rear hole?
