stuttering idle.......help please
Ok, my car just starting doing this out of the blue, no changes to settings or anything. When I'm idling at a red light its as if my car is stuttering. the rpm would lower at random time and sometimes it'll feel like the car is about to die. then when i start driving it feels as if my power is stuttering on and off too so it'll be kinda jerky, then after a couple of seconds it feels like it fixes itself and the car drives smooth again, but sometimes still has hickups while driving, especially during a hard acceleration. Any suggestions? I was thinking something to do with the ignition maybe.......

Plugs, FPR screwing up and increasing/decreasing FP at random. Pump giving out?
i hope its not the pump, its a new walbro 190.....i did burn out my last set of plugs kinda fast but it didn't have this effect when they were bad; before i could just smell the gas like crazy...hmmm, i'll check them out after work

Whats on the car?
Is it when the car is cold or warm? (O2 sensor) |
Even if you are not running Emanage, it is worth a look at the AFM:
https://www.miataturbo.net/e-manage-10/its-alive-3974/ |
it has a greddy turbo kit with starion intercooler, begi afpr, walbro 190, and 1.8L injectors. i retarded timing to 5-6 deg. i don't think theres been that big of a weather change in houston to make it act up, but i could be wrong since this is my first turbo car. i thought i heard before turbo cars like the cold weather better. i have an emanage blue connected but its not tuned for anything yet, since i thought the 6 deg is adequate for the 4 psi. now, when u say look at the afm do u mean the stock one or the begi?
woops::::i meant begi afpr.....my bood |
Begi doesn't sell a afm silly.
hmmm, i just read your link olderguy and it sounds like thats my problem. where exactly is the resistance strip u cleaned?
thats what it looks like the the afm? i never took one of those apart....anything i should be cautious about? springs flying out?
watch for trolls, but thats about it.
no, just take a razor to the outer seal. and lift the black top off.
if you move the tensioner lock then the spring might unwind and screw things up, but you wont be touching that will you ;) |
how does the seal go back on? do i need to use an epoxy or anything?
you can. I never did. I just popped the lid back in place.
I would suggest a set up plugs and wires if you think it could be an ignition problem. Bad plug wires will cause hesitation similar to what you've described. You can use a meter to check your wires to see if they need replacing or not. I would just put new plugs as they are inexpensive and not worth cleaning IMO.
ok, I had to sacrifice lunch but i found the problem: there was a small hole in one of my spark plug wires so it was sparking out the side. all said and done, its better now =) thanks for everyone's help
that's why whenever one has a run problem, the first test should always be the 'grab your plug wires' check.
