T5 trans development

Just found this going through begi's site. Seems like they are installing a T5 trans on a customers build, and making a custom bell housing. They also hint at making a production cast piece. This would be awesome if someone actually came through with putting together a hassle free (at least begi's level of hassle free) of fitting a T5 trans in there.

Anyone heard of this or know any updates on it? Stephanie?

I'd like to know more.

This sparks my interests.

there is a thread by Corky on this on M.net

This one doesn't fit the T5 I guess

And it's probably not hard to beat the price and the availability of the Quicktimes either... (if you don't need the SFI)

From what I know, the T5 is quite strong but not the best transmission in shifting?
They aren't that expensive new, that might be a great plus?
I have one for my '73 euro Ford Escort. Quad4rods sold me a bellhousing to fit the T5 to the Duratec/MZR engine. For NC cars ?

If you guys can run a TKO500-600, why are you burning money on the Mazda transmissions? A torque arm isn't that hard to fab up. 3.27 first gear, .68 5th... Keep you from having to spin the balls off the motor just while your chugging down the highway (or running 140+ down the back stretch)

They already have the shifter issue sorted out-

Another idea for linkage

Going into a local Cobra build (I have nothing to do with it), and it is supposed to work well enough (for a Cobra):)

we installed a tremec tko-3550 in the cobra replica my dad built. best transmission ive used. would love to have one in the miata.

Holy ----, this is the first I've seen that bellhousing. That may be a simpler and less expensive way about getting it done. I wonder if Corky knows about this.

If this is like any other 'new' part from BEGI, it may be many years before it comes out if ever.

New intake manifold anyone? Pics next week promise!

I send him the link

that shifter linkage is sexy
wonder what it does for gate width

[damn, i just bought a replacement 6-sp]

Anyone have any opinions of fitting an Aisin ar-5? Not as easy to find as a t5 but still plentyfull and a little smore refined than a T5. Gears to long?

That's the Solstice box, IIRC. The ratios are ----.

viperormiata 01-22-2012 05:19 PM

Usuable first and tall fifth, please.

Savington 01-22-2012 05:45 PM

I can't wrap my head around the "usable 1st gear" argument.

As a baseline, let's look at some examples. At 220whp with a 6-speed and 4.10s, my 2nd gear was what I considered "usable" - it would spin on concrete on a cool evening, but otherwise you could generally hook it up in a straight line. That's a 51.4mph gear (using 7000rpm for redline, just for consistency's sake - an increased redline doesn't change the torque being applied to the rear wheels).

At 270whp with 3.909s, I could haze 2nd on pavement if I really tried to, so we'll call that usable. That's a 53.9mph gear. Based on that experience, IMO for the majority of cars in the 270-300whp range, you can put a 6-speed/3.909 or 3.636 combo and you get 5 usable ratios and a cruising gear that gives you ~3375rpm at 70 with 3.909s, or 3150rpm at 70 with 3.636s.

Let's look at the T5 ratios now. The 1st gear is either a 3.35:1, or a 2.95:1 if you're shelling out for a T5z box. Given a 225/45 tire, that gives you a 1st gear speed of 39.3mph with 3.636:1 gears. That's not a usable gear. If I can spin a 51mph gear at 220whp, and a 54mph gear at 270whp gear, a 39mph gear is a joke.

If you want a usable 1st gear, you don't want a T5 box - you want a 6-speed.

Corky Bell 01-22-2012 07:14 PM

Sav,
I would tend to agree, second gear in the 6 speed is a better ratio than first on the T5.

I can break a 6 speed. Can you break a T5?

The tool up is coming along well. With any luck at all we can ship this thing by 2016.

Fortunately, the shifter relocation is a tick more elegant than the bent wrench Cobra link. Easier, too.

Corky

wittyworks 01-22-2012 07:25 PM

Corky is your 2016 statement sarcastic or serious? I know you guys have a pretty slow production process but that must be an early April fools day joke.

Savington 01-22-2012 07:27 PM

Can you tell us about the car that broke the 6-speed?

It's too bad the Quaife gears are no longer available (price probably had a lot to do with it). With a 3.9 rear end, first is good for 45+ mph and second for over 70. I never get second gear wheelspin in the dry (at least while going straight).
