Throw out bearing wearing a ring around pressure plate

As the title states...

Got my engine out today after it started knocking last week.

Taking a look at the pressure plate, there is a ring worn into the fins on the plate, unevenly worn about 1/2" from the end of the fin...
Its a FlyinMiata clutch kit that is in the car so it should be good...

From bad to worse...i'll try to take a pic in a few hours.

Was it pressed in correctly?

Braineack 06-09-2010 12:23 PM

mine after two years of DDing:

it was inserted into the fork properly...as far as I can tell, its sitting correctly onto it...

I had trouble adjusting it at the begining and it was making a noise but i though that was from not being lubed up enough. this is crazy though

This is after 600miles, that looks amazing for 2 years!!

those wear points you have on yours would looks like a knife sliced into it.

neogenesis2004 06-09-2010 12:34 PM

You very likely had your clutch adjusted wrong, making the bearing preloaded into the clutch.

rleete 06-09-2010 12:35 PM

I'd say Brain's looks pretty typical. If you're worried about the wear, slap some bearing grease on it.

magnamx-5 06-09-2010 12:36 PM

um my bet is the bearing seized on you at some point causing excessive wear either that or your Slave was maladjusted to hold to much pressure, either way I bet your TOB is probly not as free as it should be.

Preluding 06-09-2010 03:14 PM

something seized makes sense.... I'll take a look in about 45min...

It looks like part of the fin on the pp was about the break right off it was worn so much... scary as fuck

will post pic shortly

Braineack 06-09-2010 03:20 PM

does it look more like this: seized TOB coupled with a poorly designed PP

holy shit.... yes....yes it does.... why would a brand new TOB be seized.... sweet living fuck do i ever not want to buy another PP. Although mine still might be good...

about 1/4 of the metal gone on it, maybe even less then that.

I can still move the throw out bearing by hand though, which is odd..

"seized TOB coupled with a poorly designed PP"
Should I be calling FM about their seized TOB and poorly designed PP????

Preluding 06-09-2010 05:27 PM

Called FM about this...apparently there was a recall on the level 2 clutch kit....

they'll call me back with more info and if mine was part of it tomorrow

olderguy 06-09-2010 05:41 PM

If your slave is old and fouled and cannot retract on it's own, it will hold the throw out bearing against the fins, overheat it, and either lock it up to grind against the fins or make it grenade itself.

I took slave off of a 02 miata with 20k miles on it....shouldn't be that old

bingo. I did the swap with a buddy a few weeks ago. It took about 45-minutes, lol.

45min is a good time! with or without a lift and air?

Just took the rest of it apart.... there is some bad heat damage going on!

Braineack 06-09-2010 06:23 PM

there was an issue with an early batch of FMII clutches where the TOB went through the diaphragm and pressed unevenly.

My issue was with a clutchnet PP.

I swapped my trans and clutch without rushing, and even wasted a good 10 minutes trying to pull it with a bolt still in place in about 2 hours.

lol, that would be on the floor with the help of a exhaust dump behind the front tire and the V8 Roadster subframe brace.

Preluding 06-09-2010 08:14 PM

damn... congrats....

Mine took about 3hrs... I think i'll drink more next time, although I pullled the motor off the trans and lifted that out...haven't put it back yet.

Hopefully FM replaces everything bad in this kit.... its a damn shame!
