$300 does seem steep for a no name wing. I bought a used APR GTU extruded aluminum wing for $60. Haven't mounted it to my junkyard trunk yet but the quality seems pretty good. Used name brand stuff pops up on egay and craigslist all the time, cheap.

IMO if the car has a wing on it and it's on track it has a much higher badass factor. :D If you're going to mount it to the decklid, make sure you get the armature/legs is close to the trunk edge as possible to resist the downforce on the wing.

When I had the wing on my 99, the mounting bolts actually put holes in the rubber weather stripping...pretty sure there wasn't much flexing of the decklid :D

But yeah, i'll be checking measurements of anything I look at to get the mounts over a solid area.

So speaking of very inexpensive wings, I came across someone selling this for $60. Since i'm not racing on large tracks yet, I think it'll be just fine toutilize and add some downforce and stability. I'll probably make new uprights to get it up much higher into clean air.

For auto-x, i'll be going with Swarengen's setup, the APR GT-II with a few tweaks since i'm actually being competitive.

Is anyone aware of ANY pictures of a Miata in a wind tunnel with the smoke trails showing the air flow? (top up) I'm wondering if I can mount the wing I plan on using as more of an air deflector al la GT3 RS.

and the $60 wing...

Here's a wind tunnel pic at 60 mph that I saved from a previous discussion.
And some other creative wing designs...

As I thought, it's going to take a wing at about the height of the top to catch "good" air (not to be confused with "clean air"). Which makes me wonder, if a wing were to redirect the air (as seen with the 911 picture), would it help clean up any of the aircoming off the top and down the trunk? I only can guess that since the upper flow of air isn't compressing the lower flow at the trunk lid and may allow it to flow smoother? :dunno:

They sell smoke sticks for aerodynamic testing in real world environments.
