I have a 1.6L 5spd and i need a new tranny... can i buy a 1.8L or do i need to modify the bell housing? is the bell housing bolted to or part of of the tranny? is it a direct fit? what do i have to do to drop in a 1.8L 5 spd or a 6 spd?

They're all the same, different speedo gears for some years maybe. Otherwise it should be fine.

 

id like a taller gear ratio... my car goes through first in less then 1 second.. turbo hits at 3000rpm and goes right over to 7300rpm

 

Then you need a different rearend, not a different transmission.

 

well for starters i need a new transmission, the car wont go into reverse (54k miles) and sticks going into 3rd so i cant power shift into third, and first gear is very short

dude, the 5 speeds are god for 300 hp, and the 6 speeds will bolt up to yor car, and handle alittle more power. You need a different rear end ratio to solve the shitty gearing for first gear.

Then start is 2nd gear and quit your whining. We all have a short first gear. If you don't like it then get a taller rear end. Or you can spend a small fortune on the Quaife gearset.

 

i would start in first but i also slalom(smaller version of autocross) and the idea is to stay in one gear... first... and it would just be nice to make first gear just a little longer, the rest could stay the same

 

Get a taller ring and pinion. You probably have 4.30s right now, get 3.9s.
