Transmission oil changing-is there an easy way to get to the Turret?
Time to go thru all the drive train fluids on the 2000 SE. The underneath stuff seems straight forward, is there an easy easy to get to the 94cc up in the shifter? Is the center console a bitch to get out?
Does the LSD require anything special? I was looking at using one of the major brand synthetics. Thanks, -JB |
Console removal is easy. The turret is closed off by rubber boots, so I think removing the console is the only way to get to it. |
Console is a piece of cake to take out. There are screws in the armrest cubby, and a few more forward on the outside. Lift up the back, careful of the fuel-lid/trunk releases, and it'll pop right out. There is at least one electrical connector attached to it if I remember right. Oh, and you'll have to take the shift knob off.
For the dif, standard Redline is popular. Do a title search for "fluid", should turn up the answer. |
2000 SE should have the 6spd....you can fill the trans from the turret and not worry about the pain in the ass side fill bolt. Just drain, replace drain plug, fill from turret with the required amount of fluid. On the 6spd the turret is lubricated from oil splashing around in the trans....unlike the 5spd that requires a seperate amount for lubrication.
Two screws on the front sides of the console, two in the main cubby and one under the ash/change bin. You'll have 4 10mm bolts to get the rubber boot off (it'll likely rip somewhere too) and 3 10mm bolts holting the shifter in place. Or if you have the car up in the air and don't mind the pump, you can fill it from the fill hole on the side until it starts to overflow. Just make sure you take off the right "bolt" for the fill as there is a similar looking one on the side that will fuck up the transmission if you remove it. |
I would rather fill it at the fill bolt to ensure I don't over/under fill it, personally.

Just fyi people say amsoil mtg works the best in the mazda 6 speed.

The car typically drains the turret over time for you. I'd be surprised if there were any oil inside it.
We use Amsoil MTG in the tranny, and that choice is backed up with UOA data. |

Yes it's a 6spd. I went to the "Useful Saved Posts" sticky to look up the locate the shop manual to find the correct bolt on the tranny. The link to the library wasn't working. Sooo.... How do I tell the difference when I'm looking at the two bolts? Does the rear diff take the same stuff as the tranny? -JB |

I have never removed the fill plug on a 6-speed. Fill it through the turret. Drain everything, add 1.85 quarts through the turret, and you're done.
The diff does not take MTG. Use Amsoil SVG (Severe Gear) in the diff. |
