TSI, Naca lamp cover or both?
 

Thinking about cooling down under hood temps. What's the general concensus. TSI's or Naca lamp cover? Run both or do the TSI's mess up the airflow for the naca design to work properly?

Do DIY TSI's look to ghetto or do they turn out OK when painted up. Both DIY naca lid and TSI's are pretty cheap projects.

What about a combination of a naca duct and a heat extraction hood riser mod?

Will these work together to help cooling?

i think a while ago it was shown that the tsi dont really cool much, and actually pull out not in.

I thought it was proven that the TSI location is a high pressure area and would thus travel to the low pressure area under the hood. In any case the NACA duct is far superior but i is po'. I wouldn't say TSI's inferior with the NACA duct at all since it creates the vortex regardless of what's going on where the air is being funneled.

I had a driver side TSI, went with a NACA duct and I'm much happier; Esthetically and functionally.

Thanks for the opinions. SamS those are sharp looking DIY's. Tough to sort through all the options.

Mc-what's-their-names drag racing has the carbon fiber Naca's for DIY for about $30. Cut the lid, glass it up and touch up the edges.

Dremel out the TS's, relocate the lamp, paint, maybe fix in grid like SamS.

Buy used Naca lid, $65, and repaint.

Braineack, your opinions seem to be well reasoned and experienced and you've used both so I gotta go with you on the Naca lid. Now just have to figure out which way I want to go. Cut my existing or respray a used one I have available.

Thats what I want to know...I just bought a full headlight cover in need of restoration and the risers are fugly but might work.

My NACA fiberglass lid was $20...I've just got to attach new fasteners and repair a corner.

an extractor would probably not work, due to the pressure system. I was thinking of drilling a hole behind the clutch master to allow the air to escape, but IIRC it's a high pressure zone behind it, so the air will enter on both sides. It works good enough as is. I measured the surface temps after a 15min session on the track. I don't remember the actually numbers the but the filter and the piping was like 90°, just out of the airflow of the duct and the pipes surface temp was like 120° or something. With the duct taped shut and another 15min session, the filter itself has a surface temp of something around +150°

Never raise the back of your hood. You will introduce high pressure air into the engine bay, causing the front of the car to become more unstable at speed. If you're worried about cooling with that high pressure air, then you should be looking somewhere else to fix your cooling issues.

Cheap TSI that is functional and mild is to dremel out the empty daytime running light area of the turn signals, then put a piece of screen in there. I know it works, I did it, and got all kinds of crud inside the fender in that area that was not previously there.

miatamania has the tsi's on sale right now. save about $20. i ordered mine and should be in today. i think they look a little better then the naca and theoretically should be more effective. plus they work headlights up or down

well, theoretically the NACA should prove better, since it's designed to create a vacuum into the scoop without distrupting the airfoil above it. plus, it has a direct path into the bay, when the lights are down the headlight covers 85% of the gap that you create with the tsi.

all in all, tsi or naca, i feel it's better than just a cone filter sitting in the bay without any ambient air source.
