Tumbling further down the rabbit hole...

This is mainly for auto-x use, and is completely removable. I've been playing cat n mouse with the fastest cars at the BMWCCA auto-x down here, most of them are on race rubber - last event I was 0.2 sec off of Brian Goodwin in his stripped/supercharged/R-comp NC, and I've taken it upon myself a bit of a quest to see how fast I can make the car on street rubber as the underdog... the tail gets pretty happy on corner exits and I felt the thing holding me back the most at the last event was having to stay really light footed on corner exit..

So I made myself some rear downforce. I turned to Moti for initial ideas since he has used such a spoiler with great results back in the day, and went from there.

Details: Built with a dremel, drill, and manual rivet tool. Made from 6mm alumalite since I have tons left over from my front splitter project, the brackets are all 1/8" aluminum that I cut from bar stock and shaped with the dremel. The struts I pieced together using 5/16" threaded rod, heim joint ends, nuts and brass tubing as a sheath around the threaded rod. Joins to the bumper with hinges so the angle can be changed. Currently at 45*

It's not the prettiest thing, but I made it myself for pretty cheap and it should work. Will be trying it out on August 13 at the next autocross. All those on R-comps, I'm coming for you.

It must be a pain getting groceries in the trunk with that on there.

ThePass 07-29-2011 03:56 AM

Forgot the :jerkit:.

Have you tried it out yet?

Have you considered adding side plates to increase the effect by cutting spillover at each end?

I hadn't thought of that, I like that idea. I'll see how I like the feel of it and I'll play with the angle at the next event and then might consider adding something like that to see how much that helps/changes things.

I drove the car at a clinic I was instructing at just to play around on my recon laps and compared to the last event where I had some seat time I noticed a major increase of stability and traction at speed.

Totally viable. :giggle:

I thought the rules stated that the trunk must remain functional, as in being able to open and close with the spoiler attached.

Most of the top CSP miatas use a similar spoiler out of plexiglass that's curved a bit more. I'm sure you can find photos over on one of the the other Miata forums under the autocross section.

Don't know what you're talking about - I make my own rules
