Turbo Miata vs. turbo civic

Their transmissions do suck past 300whp. Up to that point they actually hold together without any problems unless you beat the **** out of them. Hks makes ok uppipes and exhaust, but their downpipes are the biggest POS' ever made. Absolutely worthless design. That was holding him back. Next is his cai: those are **** as well, unless specifically tuned for them you actually lose power. A car at that level really doesnt need an ebc OR an mbc: he could have easily used the stock bcs. A "generic stage 2 flash" can be everything from something that gains 40whp to something making his car run like absolute **** and extremely dangerous. Unless protuned by someone that knows what they're doing or received from a reputable source, subaru "tunes" should be used with extreme caution. I would look first at the plugs (make absolutely SURE they are ngk's) and then the fuel injectors. When I upgraded my 07 from a td04 to a vf39 to an 18g and started running 18psi the plugs got fouled:
This caused the car to lose 1/3rd of its power while not throwing any cel's or showing any signs of a problem. Like an idiot I replaced them with generic autozone specials and the car ran even worse. I thought It blew a piston or something. Then replaced em with ngk 1 step colder and the car ran like champ.
Anyhow, if his car in the condition its in put a hurting on your mazda, you dont even want to know what it would do with decent parts, tuned to its potential, and running right
I am on my 3rd subaru and though I love my miata the subaru is like my mistress

By "EBC" I'm referring to the factory electronic boost control solenoid which he assumed was bad, replaced with one from a friends car and made no difference at all.
The car actually *used* to run and pull pretty good, but without rhyme or reason it just turned to complete dog ****. No, right now, in its current running condition, he doesn't stand a remote chance against the MS6.. The tune was from a reputable tuner in the area for Subrau and it did actually run pretty well at one point, even had it reflashed with the same one again from the same guy thinking maybe it lost it for some reason.. Changed nothing.
Haven't seen a CEL. We even hooked up a scantool from a subaru dealer and spent the entire weekend looking through things attempting to find a problem. Not sure about the plugs, they could be factory installed for all I know (120,000 miles now IIRC) but for some reason I'm thinking he changed them a while back.. If he did it woulda been long before it started running like crap. More specific about his CAI, its just a billit maf adapter and very large filter element placed where the factory airbox would be. The adapter is a name brand I've heard of but its not coming to mind. The factory "Scoop" for the airbox inlet under the hood we hacked up to help blow colder air onto the filter element.
You're right about that downpipe for sure.... I laughed my *** off when I saw the design of it. Looks like a standard 5 bolt outlet off the turbo, but the flange on the downpipe is just a flat piece of steel with ONE hole for the pipe without any provision for the wastegate at all! Silly!

Ah that makes more sense. Did he do a compression test? There are quite a few of 120+k mile wrx's in this area still running like champ's with full exhaust/vf39/sti tmic/injectors putting down mid to high 200's whp. I would say a majority of wrx's die after a while because they were either modded and not tuned (intake, tbe or anything more = big no no without tune) for whatever period of time, or improperly tuned by a self proclaimed "tooner".

I'm pretty sure the Jetta was stock, it sounded like any other Jetta I've heard, had the stock exhuast.. dunno we took him at first but like everyone knows the WRX falls on it's face above 5k or so.
At least now I have some sympathy for the guys who think their bad *** trucks will beat my Miata and lose horribly.

there is a decrease in power towards redline, but to say that it "falls on its face"?
That is the 2.0L...
The 2.5's are quite a bit better.
the 09 wrx's are EVEN better and hold the power all the way to redline.
