Video of my miata... wheee
You like?
I see knock on the OP gauge as well as some low Oil pressure :td: you should get that taken care of man.
^ yea, I thought it was a real OP gauge but it never moves.
i did see it wiggle slightly once on one run in 5th gear
as for the presure, i have no clue why its low. 10W40 oil, and its not low or anything... could be the contacts for the gauge? |
Nice, looks good.
I thought all 1.6s had real OP gauges? Yeah, it's always at 30psi - weird. Nice vid - I enjoyed. :bigtu: Good for us who are working on the weekend.
well I just went out and drove it, the OP is fine untill it gets very warm (multiple 0 to 120 mph runs..). Maybe im overheating the oil?
my 1.6 usually runs 35 + when cold and at idle around 25ish hot

what are you're oil temps when the pressure drops? so it actually reads higher than 30 and moves with the rpm?

put in in 6th ...lol ..good vid tho
^hope your not serious no 6th gear on 1.6L lol. And my OP gauge moves a little when its cold but when the cars hot it usually stays the same. And fill up on gas cheapo lol
Odd
My OP gauge is all over the place during normal driving and sometimes during cruise and you can definitely see/hear when there is knock. |
yea me 2 my OP gauge moves all over like its supposed to it raises with more throttle and moves alot if there is knock
maybe the electrical contacts for the gauge are messed up/dirty? Eaither way I use 93 octaine gas and I here no knock.
^^ i retrofitted my 99 with an older 94- and below OP gauge and sender, and it moves all over the place too. during cold start up, my OP is around 80, and when its running hot, the OP gets to around 30-60, moves all over the place with throttle changes.

Just to be safe, I'd check it with another gauge. You need more oil pressure than 30psi at 6k+ rpm.

I guess I should do that. |
my oil pressure moves with my tach, once warmed up it sits near 0 at idle, and may go up to about 35 or 40 at WOT :dunno:

i think i'm going to get another oil pressure gauge and mount it on my gauge bezel because i've heard the OEM ones can crap out... may also be my sending unit though
mines at 80 cold, and sits 30-60 warm
I've seen it before but can't remember.. Which wideband display is that?
Where in the video (time, secs) do you see or hear knock. I don't have an ear or eye for this.
it's the bouncing of the oil pressure gauge needle

how can you see knock on a gauge the surely isn't working  |
or: image how far that thing would be bouncing IF it were working

just FYI, I dont hear any knock at all, so if it is knock it is subtle the wideband display is a $10 volt meter off ebay wired into one of the LC-1 outputs. The gauge moves ALOT more when the car is cold... :eek5: |
it could be trash in the sender (random flickering) - I had that BUT is it repeatable at the same rpm/load? IOW doesn't only flicker under load at 6k vs. 6k w/o load? That'd be an indicator.
where is the best place to get a reading for oil pressure?
for comparison? I would do it at that same spot, "apples to apples". Doesn't take much to unscrew the OE sender.
The oe spot is the ideal location to measure pressure. And Scot i felt it better to be cautius in my advice as i did see the guage move abit and given the range it showed us there, i figured it was a significant variation to advise him off. Not that he would go around thinking he was 1000000000% safe and be hammering the shit out of his pistons with silent knock.
Magna, I didn't see the gauge wiggle enough to indicate detonation. The OP is very low, though. My '94 is around 85 at cold idle, down to around 30 at normal warm idle, to 25 at hot idle. WOT oil pressure is never lower than 45-50.
imma put a real gauge on it. What are the size/pitch of the threads for the stock location?
