weak rearend?

ive done some lookin, and apparently, the early miatas diffs are fairly weak.. instead of swapping them out for the rx-7, ect... would welding the diff be any stronger for a short term fix, or make it more prone to breaking?

cardriverx 09-19-2008 07:26 AM

Its the ring and pinion that strips, not the internals. So no, it wont help at all.

AlexT88 09-19-2008 07:31 AM

preciate it man... im looking to get a 92-93, mainly because seems to be more parts availible, and theyre a lil cheaper. would swapping in the 1.8 solve the problem? i plan to build decent power, and give it hell often??

If you swap in the 1.8 you'll need to upgrade the rear end anyway because you'll break it. There are people who break that rear end with stock power, so any additional power will just annihilate the 1.6 rear end.

AlexT88 09-19-2008 07:42 AM

yea thats what i hear. sorry, i miss typed.... what i meant was if i swap in the 1.8 rear, w/ the 1.6 mildly modded. how long would it hold up?

icantthink4155 09-19-2008 07:56 AM

I have some pinion salad, yum:-D

Agreed. Comes with a torsen already, you get the 1.8, a real OPG, OBD1, and the nifty visors that fold in half!

AlexT88 09-19-2008 12:19 PM

thanks for the help. the obd1 part is also what i wanted, didnt wanna deal w/ all the bs of obd2.. opg im guessing is oil pres gauge?

Yep, OPG is oil pressure gauge. I can't remember if it was 95 or 96 that they switched to the dummy gauge, but either way, you get a real one with a '94. Minor benefit, but all the little benefits add up to make '94 the best year.

Anybody want to guess which year mine is? :-)

disturbedfan121 09-19-2008 01:02 PM

90?

My 93 has those. Don't they all?

patsmx5 09-19-2008 04:16 PM

I feel like I need to say this to clear things up. Get a 94.

The Ring and Pinion (R&P) are what usually breaks, which immediately destroys the rest of the differential. If you are building one, shim it to the tight end of spec, or a spec tighter. That will make it less likely to break from shock loads.

'90 to '94 has them, and in '95 they switch to regular full sized ones.

Not that it matters, because a lot of us remove the visors altogether. ;)

Nitroracer 09-19-2008 08:31 PM

Now that the sun is setting sooner I'm wanting to put those damn visors back in though!

That was my very first modification, and I did it about 20 feet into the test drive before I even bought the car. If I put it down, I can't even see the entire hood :bang:

Savington 09-20-2008 12:28 PM

Gotta admit, I'm actually considering putting my sunvisors back in. I dropped my seat down so low that I wouldn't mind having them again.

That was my first mod
