Welding steering pinion

Yeah it looks good, but the rack is jammed because the damn thing is warped.
Who can weld one of these up without warping it?

shuiend 04-15-2015 02:05 PM

I think Abe@artech did Hustlers a few years ago.

There is a huge discussion somewhere on here about spot welds vs fully welded. I would do like 4-6 spot welds around the whole thing, letting it fully cool in between.

I never did this and don't feel like I'm missing it.

I've wondered about this. Obviously there's some play in the pinion when you have it out and in your hands, but once everything is installed and loaded up, I can't see that slack being perceptible.

I may still have Abe weld mine.

Abe of ARTech welded mine

curly 04-15-2015 09:34 PM

Oregonmon had his mounted in a drill and had a pretty precise pin hammered in. Worked flawlessly, and no warping

This guy can do it:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1429151601

but seriously- he tacked it in 4 spots, let it cool each time, then blasted weld around the whole thing.

Mines fully tigged and smooth. BUT there is some play left in the rest of the column. I'd say if your column is all past 100k don't worry. You'll probably still have play(very slight). Just remembered I actually felt that same play prior to the weld, I don't recall any difference in that play and what I have now.

+2 for the Coors welding helmet.

-1 for not yet opening the last beer in the case before starting the welding.

Car just rolled 34k, so most parts are pretty solid.

Details? I was thinking about doing this instead of welding.

curly 04-16-2015 11:42 AM

I'll try to track down a picture. I thought he posted one in his CR build thread (Oregonmon), but I didn't go through all 20 pages.

concealer404 04-16-2015 11:47 AM

Ah ok, i remember seeing that now. I can find it. :)

Ditto...

Ben 04-21-2015 09:54 AM

I'm installing a non welded pinion in the car for now, so I can drive it this weekend.
I'll get a 2nd one welded up and install it at some point.

mcfandango 04-21-2015 09:59 AM

I can feel the slack driving around pits and grid. But on course? I find it hard to believe you'd ever notice that little bit of slop

Twibs415 04-21-2015 09:46 PM

Iv welded up a few for local members. None warped fully welded. I think i did brianzata's actually.

What defines "local"? It's a big world.
