What happened to my 1.8L
Driving home from work the other day, I noticed my temp gauge creeping up. (Maybe 10% increase over normal) I backed off the throttle and started looking for an exit. Temps came back down to normal for a few minutes then back up. Then sudden decline of power at a steady rate and temp spiked simultaneously. Shuttering, bad engine noise, I cut the power and coasted to the shoulder.
Got it towed home, would crank, but no start.
CEL was showing but scanner picked up nothing.
Tach would not move during crank.
Threw a compression tester on 1,2,&4 Cylinders - less than 5 PSI. (Yes, we confirmed the tester was working)
No coolant in the oil, but there was glitter in the oil.
Tore the cylinder head off today.
Valves look OK, Block doesn't looked scorched, No serious scoring in the cylinders.
What's my next step?

Yes, 5 psi max. We tested #1 - 5psi, went to #2 - 5psi, put that plug in and went back to #1- 5psi. Put the tester on a buddies car just to be sure - worked fine. Put it back on #4 just for shiz and giggles - 5psi.
and the cam visible through the fill cap was rotating fine.
and the head bolts were very snug. Breaker bar snug.

Jumped timing belt is my guess.
Did you verify belt timing marks before you tore it down?
I'd have done a bit more diagnosis before tear down.
Comp test on all 4 with all plugs out.
Leak down test on all 4 cold.
Verify t-belt timing.
I agree with the others...
Those pictures don't look like the root of your problem.
If the head is as clean as the pistons, then it almost has to be cam timing.
