What is this cover called?
I tried every possible name combination out there and google just shrugs at me.
A part number would be incredibly helpful, too.

 

That's a Mazdaspeed only part, if that helps.

 

My '00 NB has the same part, and its not a Mazdaspeed

I think i have it still laying in the garage and can check what part number is on it when im in the garage

Do you think it's essential like the engine undertray?

 

Dozens of 01+ miatas I've seen, that shield is only on mazdaspeeds here. Could be a non-US thing only except the MSM. I'd call it very unnecessary. I think it's supposed to be a headshield, seems fairly useless if you ask me.
