Seriously, all are good in their own right, but if you were picking from scratch, general consensus is 94-95. Gets the 1.8L but is OBDI. Not better, just a bit easier to deal with emissions stuff. |

best question would be: which miata is best to drift?
answer: none. to answer first question. '94. various reasons spelled out in full elsewhere. |
drift.....
I know it may not be the bes car...but its his choice....and at 16 yo there is no swaying his mind.
I know from tracking Bimmers....obd1 tends to be best for mods. |
Nothing good can come from this thread.

does he love drifting so much he leaves skidmarks in his pants? |

reminds me of "Drift: The Sideways Craze" I watched last night. I couldn't stop laughing. Human Interest part of it was a 16yo trying to learn how to drift in his, you guessed it, 240.
|
i learned to drift in 240. then, you guessed, i crashed it.

get him a 240 so when he crashes it...cause it will happen....it'll be cheaper to replace and or fix.
does he love drifting so much he leaves skidmarks in his pants? A Miata is a terrible thing to waste drifting, there so many more modest ways to have one part with this world. jrkoupe-are you sure it's not too late to beat some sense into a 16 year old? Take him to a local auto-x and get him hooked on the proper line, and if that doesn't work, you can beat the crap out of him again, only with an big objet this time. Good Luck to ya |
show him this. |
i'm actually surprised that you are encouraging him to drift, i mean, its only gonna get his license taken away, or worse. Be a parent, not a friend.
and on a serious drift note, drifitng a miata is harder because of the shorter wheel base. |
drift.....
wheres the love to a newbie here?.......
I rather he drift an e 30 bimmer...I could build him one for under 3k .........its gotta be a me yata...... |
no love for a newbie who asks dumb questions and posts like he's 15 and not old enough to have a 16yr old son.
roadsterdrift.com is what you're looking for |

You dont really know me. I understand the sht wb issue and I agree.......point taken. |

With him being 16 and just getting his license maybe he should be concerned about not getting into a normal accident aka rear ending someone. Teach him how to drive and shift, and whatnot before jumping head on into drifting, which is NOT a good idea, probably one of the most $$$ motorsports. As for the parent and not a friend thing, out your foot down and be like hey you're not doing this etc.... |

muahahaha geez...for sure. |
besides. ITBs are better for drifting.
|
whoops correction ITRBs
|
I thought it was IRTB's? Who cares, both are badass!
Again Jr., save your kid from humiliation, teach his the proper straight line (pun intended). He will get picked on in school and life in general. Who was it that said, "Drifting a Miata is like doing gay porn and saying you're straight." |
the R stands for Racing.
It's like throwing a GT-R emblem on my car. |
I love how those drifter guys in that video had full racing suits, but no helmets. I would be more afraid of clipping the grass and rolling over than it catching on fire.
Have you seen that video where the kid is running down a canyon in his Miata "drifting", then slams into the wall? Go with something cheaper, Miatas become very expensive very quickly. |

Wait a sec...
You want your son to have an e30. It sounds to me like you're willing to pay for said e30. And your son does not wish to have this e30? He'd rather drive the official car of NAMBLA? Have you ever discussed with your son the confusing feelings that I assume he gets when he looks at the other boys in school? |
Nice thread title change. That will get you some love here.

we're going to start running out of miatas soon.
|
I can't imagine jrkoupe hasn't already considered the possibility of crashing. And if he's building the car, I'm sure he's prepared to be fixing it. I'd buy the cheapest NA (90-95) Miata you can find that's a good candidate. Then start shopping for turbo parts.
|
best year to wreck is 06+. it makes them look better.
|
e30 has more steering angle potential. tighter turning radius than a miata.
|
As much as I want to race and auto-x, and I probably will in the future I would not let my 16 year old son do it. At least not until he is passed the age where he still thinks like a child, that he is immune to everything and nothing can go wrong.
I cant tell you how to raise your son, but I would say no if I was in your shoes. Especially because youre footing the bill. He wants to drift tell him to go find a job, learn some responsibilities and pay for it himself or at least tell him you will match whatever he invests, if you cant talk him out of it. Then you will truly see how badly he will wants to do this when he thinks long an hard how quickly and easily his hard earned money will turn into a steaming pile of iron with one mistake. |
He's 16 and you want to put him in a 2200lb turbo car? How about starting with something a little easier to handle. Not that Miatas are monsters or anything but he should atleast get some experience in driving first. I would never give my car to a 16 year old and my car is no where near the fastest car on here.

Put him in a boat like an old crown vic that was a former police car and have him learn to drive. |
I highly reccomend the E30. The miata takes a bit of work to drift well, the E30 is good right out the box if you weld the diff and pull the front sway bar.
|
i dont hate drifting, its fun as hell. but setting up a car to do just that is retarded.
|
Buy a cheap 1.6l, buy open 1.8 diff weld it, buy cheap(greddy?) turbo kit, buy mspnp9093, roll bar, etc. When he wrecks it i got dibs on ms and rollbar!

Are you just angry about having a shit car when you were 16 and want every other 16y/o to have a shit car too? There will always be rich asshole kids with nice cars, but a miata is far from overkill, and a relatively sensible and cheap vehicle to start out in. You can(and likely will) crash anything when you are 16. Plus like Slava pointed out, if he crashes it, more parts for us. On the drifting tip though, I'd seriously get something easier to slide around, and an E30 would be really cool, but if it must be a miata, then I'd say 1.6 because shit is cheap yo. |
kostya, because 16 year olds tend to drive their miata off the cliff or get tickets for racing in canyons.
sorry, i couldnt resist :) |

Why the fuck do you try and deter every 16y/o who wants a miata? And every time you suggest getting a shitty old crown vic. Miatas are great cars to learn how to drive in, and can teach you many aspects of car control which a crown vic would fail to do so.

I am merely saying that it would be wise to start on something cheap and safe while you learn to drive. Its better that way for everyone. It prevents you from getting over confident and driving outside your abilities. It teaches the driver respect for what he has and he can graduate onto bigger things. If people have the money its their prerogative, I am not telling anyone how to spend it. I am, however, making a suggestion that could yield positive results. I for one didn't have a car at 16. I started driving at the age of 18, and it was my mothers 92 Marquis. I then moved onto a 99 Altima which I still have, and now the Miata. Now. If you are one of these rich asshole kids, then stop getting so fucking defensive. |

any 90-93...bauce the 1.6 isn't worth a crap. I don't mind seeing 1.6 cars go bye-bye...... 1.8 cars are nicer cars so please don't destroy one. Oh and make sure the car has leather.
hehe |

That was more like an accident waiting to happen, spurred on by a mid corner bump. But the fact that I left that without a scratch says something about the miata's safety, along with my amazing luck. Also, who was it running canyons with a bunch of crazy Russians a few months ago? |
