wheel side CVs - how do you remove the actual shaft from them ?

wheel side CVs - how do you remove the actual shaft from them ?
Help !
my 1994 has the two piece driveshaft - I have the hub and shaft in my vice and the boot pulled back from the wheel end cv - but I cant figure how to take it to pieces - theres no circlip - I have hit / thumped / sworn and it still doesnt seperate !
how does one seperate the wheel side cv (constant velocity) joint from the shaft ?
