When are cheap Ebay AN fittings acceptable?

Now, i would never run fluids under pressure through them (oil, fuel), but what about valve cover vents? I need -10 hose ends for my venting setup, and going with Ebay crap saves me $60. Yes, i'm a cheapass. Yes, i'm willing to not save the $60 if it saves my car from spontaneously exploding.

My reason for considering this is that these lines are going to a vented can anyways, and there should be very little to no pressure through these lines.

So... would the car go up in a huge explosion if i were to use ebay hose ends in this application?

I've never seen fittings cheaper than the Mocals through Bat Inc.

Those are same price or more than Summit. I'm talking about REALLY cheaping out and getting the "same" stuff from Ebay for 50% less, but wondering if that's a bad idea (definitely wouldn't for fuel or oil) even in this particular application.

It's a catch can, who cares? They'll probably be a bitch to assemble, but it's just a catch can.

RyanRaduechel 11-27-2012 05:16 PM

Breather lines....that's all I am going to say, just breather lines.

That's what my thought process was, just figured i'd get some affirmation from a larger potentially more knowledgeable base since one of my local buddies seems to think my car is going to explode if i do this. Appreciate it.

That would be my assumption.

RyanRaduechel 11-28-2012 01:25 PM

I don't feel like looking, but how cheap is cheap?

$9 shipped for a 90 degree -10AN hose end, $8 shipped for a straight -10AN hose end. I need 4 of each. It adds up.

Leafy 11-28-2012 01:39 PM

What? Which type of hose end are you looking for? This Style?

Nice find.... yes, that style.

[edit]

Ehhhhh nevermind. Still ~$30 more with the 90s and shipping. Bummer.

Leafy 11-28-2012 01:46 PM

Yeah, I use plumbing monkey for all my fittings. They arent as fast as summit if you needed a part yesterday. But you cant be the prices on legitimate name brand parts. They actually affiliated with a real industrial fitting distributor, so if you want to order like 100 of the same fitting, or a couple hundred feet of hose, their industrial partner might be able to get you a better deal.

They're $96.34 shipped for the 8 fittings i need vs. Ebay from Speed_Daddy for $67.16 shipped.

Now the catch is that the PlumbingMonkey stuff is actually legit parts.

Very cool, though... i may just order all my -6 through them to make up the difference at the same time, actually.

Oh, and forgot i need two -10 female caps.

Thanks for the site link!

When you say they aren't as fast as summit (I get stuff next morning from Summit), just how much slower are they? I'm cool with 5-7 days, but i can't have this drag on.

Leafy 11-28-2012 01:55 PM

Yeah, we're talking the cheap shipping takes a week or so. I've bought from there on a couple occasions and it take then a day or two to get the stuff packaged in the box, and on the truck.

concealer404 11-28-2012 01:58 PM

Cool, that might be alright. I must admit i haven't checked Earl's yet. They have a shop about 15 minutes away from me. In the past, i've found their prices to be good sometimes, and awful sometimes, but there's no wait or shipping charges. (But there is tax.)

I like ANplumbing.com .. they have pretty great customer service, and are pretty cheap too. But if you're on a budget for "just breather lines", why not use push lock instead of braided? It's way cheaper, and works pretty great. If it's good enough for my heater core lines, it should be plenty for your breather.

Leafy 11-28-2012 02:42 PM

I think the choice of braided is more for looks. Fuel hose would be more than acceptable, hell 20 cents a foot clear vinyl tubing would work with barb fittings from mcmaster. But both look like shit.

Well, and neither of those really seal that well when just jammed over some -10AN male fittings previously welded into my valve covers.

It's BECAUSE RACE CAR at this point whether i like it or not.

Leafy 11-28-2012 02:51 PM

As long as its the right size... :fael:

Push lock hose has an AN fitting on one end and the proper hose size and barb size to make an exceptional seal on the other.
