Default WRX/STi bumper vents

I was staring at my co-workers WRX and noticed the bumper vents could possibly work well as a miata hood vent. I made tracings just see how they worked proportionally/aesthetically (sorry, no pics yet). Size wise they look like a good fit. I'm a bit mixed on the aesthetic front as I feel the radiused vent profile conflicts with the very linear hood lines of a miata (but I'm an OCD designer ... the rest of you folk probably wouldn't care).

Anyone tried this route before? Seems like another option along with the mini/GT500 vents ... might give is a shot once the car is up and running.

Can you ballpark the dimensions? It looks asymmetrical...
  1. Make template(s) out of paper
  2. Tape to hood
  3. Take pics
  4. Post pics
  5. Prepare anus

They are symmetric - you have to use the pair. They fit nicely between the headlight doors and the 'bulge'. I'll snap a pic once I make some less crude templates.

Yeah, I meant that they are individually asymmetrical through their centerline and the pair appear to be mirror images of each other. I articulate fail.

Both the Mini and FR500 vents stick up out of the hood, so you aren't losing/gaining much aesthetically there. This site also seems to be form over function for mods like this, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you can fit them on each side of the under-hood center support rib, that would be neat. I would be leary about cutting that rib, but I'm a wuss. I'm interested to see how this turns out

Here's the pics (note: I didn't check for an option which avoids cutting the hood frame ... it's raining and I'm supposed to be at work working )

Narrow Spacing

Medium Spacing

Wide Spacing

Okay, now someone should buy a pair and be the test subject.

This is about where the open spots in the ribbing are on my NB. These Subby vents might just fit.

Why not just use the reversed hood scoop? It's been done before, so you know it'll work.

I think they'd aesthetically work better on an NB too.

I'm a bit conflicted regarding the NA - while the body surfacing has plenty of curves the parting lines on the hood are so damn linear (and abundant).

I'd really prefer a scaled down version of the GT500 vent as it is a bit more linear and monolithic. Perhaps when I'm bored over the winter I will CAD something up and have an FDM part made (ABS rapid prototype).

The GT500 vent is just to big for my tastes and the mini scoop seems to look funny if it gets up on the hood bump. I like this because we might not have to cut the ribbing under the hood. Might make it easier or keep the hood stiff.

I'm going to check the NA rib/structure placement this evening ... I'll post pics if there's a plausible option.

Can you steal borrow them off your buddies car, get a good tracing, scan and post a PDF or something? Just a thought. Anyone else have access to one of these vehicles? Doesn't Brainy or maybe 18 have one the these scoobaroos?

I gave you props for ditching work to take pictures of car stuff

I checked the frame on the NA ... no way you can avoid cutting the frame AND still have functional venting. The only voids in the frame where the vents could fit are behind the headlight doors, centered on the hood bulge (over the cam cover), or in the upper corners (which is pressurized and therefor a terrible place to vent).

NBs might be different ... it's been a while since I've peaked under the hood of one.

I also like these, though they definitely have a more function biased approach.

Shamelessly selling my 02 WRX hood scoop if anyone wants to reverse mount another Subie part:
