;) Explained!
|
Did you by any chance dropped the injector when you took it out? I wonder if it's stuck open. Tried tapping it with a hammer?
|
Leaky injector lead to hydro-lock. ?
|
I did kinda carelessly plop them on the ground when I uninstalled them (Never thought I would be running my car on them again) Sooo....could be faulty injector leading to hydrolock? I kinda wondered that myself..
|
please rip apart the 1.6 when you can.
for science. |

Craigslist failed me so far. I literally called 20 yards today. Found one for $600 in Delaware w/ 160k but it doesn't have manifolds and all that
|
Maybe a stupid question for a 1.6 (I know this applies for the 1.8 engine), but:
when you put the manifold back on, did you accidentally sandwich the coolant hose bracket between the head and the manifold? If so, that would account for all the noise and the smoke since the manifold isn't seating against the head. |

Wow... Just got a text from my boss. I am getting a company car! I can pick anything I want from the auction... No idea what I'm going to get, but if there is an ST that runs through I will try to grab one!
Sooooooooo I guess this means the Miata will stay :D |
Nice.
Why do you want an ST so bad? I mean I like them, neat little cars, but there are so many other cars that are just as cool or cooler |
~20k, quick, can move if it snows, practical.... What other options would you suggest?
|
ms3, wrx, evo, I dunno I'm just curious why ST specifically.

As long as it's reliable and not a total bore to drive I'll be happy.... Even if I do have to get a cookie cutter I'll still be happy cause it's reliable transportation and I'll still have the miata for fun |

Vlad my top choice for my company car is now a ms3... Simply because there is a much better chance of finding one at the auction since theyve obviously been around a lot longer.
While I'm looking for a motor... I decided to pull my rear apart to pull out the damage from being rear ended... I dropped the bumper and finisher panel off at my parents so my dad can refurbish them for me. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1407715655 |
Nice. yeah a guy I know had one, with bolt ons it made 300whp no prob
|
Damn that's crazy! Torquesteer for days I'm sure!
The only thing I'd probably do to it would be the fuel pump to keep the engine from popping... I heard they had issues there. Other than that it should make a perfect practical daily here in NJ |
I want a job where my boss says I can have any car I want from an auto auction.
|
I really feel extremely fortunate to be in the position I'm in. My boss is really the nicest guy. I do work hard for him but honestly I am really grateful for how well he treats me! After working here I don't think I could ever survive working in the "corporate" world... Small independently owned company's are where it's at!
|
I agree wholeheartedly. I've been working for a small company for 10 years (I was employee number 5, now we have around 15) and I wouldn't ever trade it for a job at a big corporation. Although I don't get a company car :)

I can see the wrx. Dunno why you'd consider a MS3 or Evo when mulling an ST. If you choose an MS3 over an ST you have issues. |

The auction has *mostly* off-lease cars... I thought about a WRX but they go for wayy too high and they are impossible to find at auction. The car will have to be in the ~$15,000 range.... |
the ms3 will be the only thing in that price range.
the ST is a 30K car that's only been out 2 years or so now. WRXs can get close if you look find a higher mileage '08 or '09 or earlier, but you don't want the 08. |

that's why you never buy the new model. They fixed a lot of the complaints of the 08 in 09. That's why I have an 09, and outside the body change in 11, 09-14 is all the same. So I went with the cheapest.
Other than the price, I saw no advantage of the ms3 over the wrx. and with the ST out, forget about it, beats it in every way. but, like you said, I'd be happy with a Chevy Cruise if it was free. |
Yep ... Free daily and I get to keep the miata and set it up properly with a 1.8 now. All will be right in the world! a ms3 (or comparable) to daily would only be an added bonus.
1st world problems eh? |
When I was briefly considering selling the miata I test drove a new MS3 and GTI (the ST wasn't out yet). I was all for the MS3 until I drove it. It was just too much work to be a fun DD. Didn't like the clutch, shifter or the torque steer. If I didn't have to worry about maintenance I would actually choose the GTI over the MS3 for a DD. As said before, now with the ST out, it would be my top choice over those other two hands down.

1.8 Arrived! Its a little dirty and gunked up from sitting for a while but it spins freely... curious to see what the compression #'s will be.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 Couple concerns though... 1.) Looks like it had some terrible blow-by (Stuck PCV valve?) - I will have to remove the intake manifold and put it in the parts washer for a while. Throttle body is gunked up just as bad... https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 2.) The plastic TB cover on the bottom (The one that has the timing marks on it) Is touching the crank pulley - I will have to rip off the crank pulley and try to re-align the plastic cover or replace it... Hopefully its just the cover and not something more serious https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 3.) CAS looks rusted and nasty - I believe I read somewhere I can use the 1.6 CAS, so I will probably swap mine over https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1408049733 |
Cas and lower timing belt cover should both swap over fine from your 1.6 to the new 1.8.

Is there any negative to using an impact gun to remove the crank pulley? I would properly torque it back on later but I'd like to pull it off quickly tomorrow morning.
|
Looks like a flood motor, You can tell by the Corrosion in the throttle body and starting in the intake manifold. Doesn't look like much water got past the throttle body so you might be okay. I picked up a flood car From hurricane sandy for my brother and the engine looked like that. On the plus side it started right up with fresh oil. All external bearings on the engine were shot though along with the CAS (corrosion galore inside)
|
What do you mean by external bearings? Like the pulley bearings?

LOLL was literally thinking the same thing - if he paid more than like $50 for that motor.........welp

For $700 buy a wrecked car that was still running and then sell me the torsen for $200
|
YOU GOTTA BE JOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Dude, shoot the person that sold it to you* *after they refund your money that is |
Bought it from a junkyard so that was probably my first mistake... But seriously there are aren't many of these things to be found around here... It's slim picking. Luckily I put this thing on a credit card so I could dispute the charge if it ever came to that....
It just sucks that I'm back to square 1 now... Time to start searching again |

How far are you willing to drive for a motor

No, but I just heard about this place near Harrisburg and I in no way can vouch for him since I've not made it there yet, but it's worth a shot to call this guy and see what he will ask. Since it's just a side business maybe he'd be reasonable on pricing. Miata Barn

man, I got SO many engines/blocks/heads I could sell you, but..........you're 5 billion miles away.
I mean we sell MINT vvt long blocks, with all the accessories, for barely more than what you paid for that hunk of crap. I'm talking so clean it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line. Drive down to CA and I'll hook you up :D |

If you can get a pallet shipped to you at work, shipping a motor from CA to NJ should only be $200-$400.
|
what really only matters is the condition inside the motor, but that TB/IM doesn't show promise.

They are sending me another one that will be here Weds..... Round 2!
|

He was arguing with me saying "Oh the water in there was from powerwashing the motor before we ship them out... the water is clear right" I replied.. The water is brown and nasty looking in there, I dont care what f'ing color the water is, I'm not using a motor with water in it. Aside from shoving the power washer nozzle up the throttle body, there is no f'ing way that this much water ended up in the motor from power washing it... Please send me a motor with no water |
