WTF oil on exhaust port?

Where is this oil coming from??? Above it is dry so I don't think it is from the valve cover. No drips, just what you see. It is on all 4 cyl.

Fresh motor... maybe 50 miles on it.

Weird. My head does that, but it just comes out as smoke, you can't see it until you take the manifold off and see the slightly oily valve stem. Is there smoke?

240_to_miata 09-25-2012 09:01 PM

Smoke after decel once I open the throttle back up. Quite a bit of it. Pretty sure I did a shit job re-building my T25. New valve seals and a shop built bottom end make me suspect the turbo or PCV as well. I do have an exhaust leak but I thought it was on the manifold-to-turbo side (Fuckin gasket)

who knows.

It's coming from your blown engine.

240_to_miata 09-25-2012 09:52 PM

No No hustler this car has a turbo... you wouldn't understand

I lol'd IRL.

I personally have good luck with rebuilt heads (previously mentioned stem leak head has a lot of track abuse on it), but I know a lot of people have had bad luck with shops rebuilding heads. Don't rule it out.

The smoke on decel sounds more like what you said, PCV or turbo seals. Although I used a Gpopshop rebuild kit on mine with great success. And mine smokes on start up, after it's had a chance to sit and seep through the leaky #4 valve seal.

Decel smoke sounds like a recently rebuilt engine with lots of compression sucking past a dying PCV valve. Replace that first if you haven't already. Can you suck on it?

I am going to replace/test it and see. I am still just confused on how the oil would be forming around the port. I cant physically feel an exhaust leak from there, but then again I do have one SOMEWHERE so I am not sure.

You can talk shit when you run within an hour of the SM record at your local track, homofag.

:waits patiently for the post where he finally replaces the bad oil rings:

LoL hustler easy... I never claim to be fast. My Turboed shutbox with me driving isn't even hitting spec times at limerock.

I'll do a leak down to shut everyone up on the motor issue... But no one has helped me figure out why oil would form OUTSIDE of my manifold.

Oil wicks-up through that "joint".

240_to_miata 09-26-2012 01:08 PM

Makes sense. I just figured it would be a large exhaust leak if oil was also able to wick up. I will first test the PCV and then get my hands on a leak down. Because the smoke comes when I open back up the throttle plate I really suspect its my turbo. I just really don't think(and hope) a professionally built motor would have ring or valve seal issues

Thanks for the answer

240_to_miata 09-27-2012 07:00 PM

-compression came in at 190-195 all around (supertech 8.6:1)
-charge pipes are bone dry.
-disconnecting the PCV hose from the IM and running a breather did nothing. My PCV is leaking though... so thats probably not helping

I still need to do a leakdown to CONFIRM its not the rings, but right now it looks like its either the valve seals (brand new) or the turbine. I suspect its the turbine because I had a hell of a time rebuilding it this time. The brass bushings were .001" oversized in my kit so I re-used my old ones (measured within spec). I also took my oil ring off the turbine side of the shaft only to realize I didn't have a replacement. I am not happy with how it went back on. I think THAT is the failure point.

CHURBO next year. for now I will probably continue to puff smoke while I pass emissions on the stock ecu/maf/inj/exhaust, etc.

curly 09-27-2012 07:25 PM

What rebuild kit did you use? My gpop shop had awesome bearings and multiple rings in case the first one didn't fit.

240_to_miata 09-27-2012 07:41 PM

gpopshop. Never had an issue previous times with the brass bushings...but this time I mic'd them way oversized. I tried installing them and literally would have had to press them in. As for the oil ring, I might have a pic of which one it was, but there wasn't a similar one in the kit.

Either way, I am not crying about an upgrade.

Faeflora 09-27-2012 08:06 PM

your fresh motors fuked yo

i hope it is not built cus if so it doesnt deserve a log and t25 of fail

240_to_miata 09-27-2012 08:08 PM

LOL thanks Fae. Yes its built. It needed a rebuild and eventually it will see more than a log mani and t25.

Motor is fine, turbo is fucked, you guys are all bullies. . . lol

flounder 09-27-2012 08:08 PM

lol at homofag. :bowrofl:

Please make motor happy and put goodie turbo on now

240_to_miata 09-27-2012 08:24 PM

First I need to torture my motor by more or less going to stock to pass emissions... Then I will treat her well.
