Sometimes you can find older Spec Miatas for 7-9K.

That may be a good way to go. Find something already setup. So, I can figure out if this is truly for me or not before I go head first.

Where are good places to look for race prepped vehicles? I know NASA has a classified section. Does SCCA or anyone else have a decent classified section?

Or go rent a Spec Miata for a weekend. I think one of the MSR-Cresson shops has a rental.
You may need one with a passenger seat, for an instructor, if you haven't been on track before.
