Which year's axles will work (pic)

So based on this pic of the 1.8 setup I have:

Attachment 215918

If one of the axles is damaged beyond use, what year's axles can I use? Apparently one was mushroomed really bad and can't be used so I need to find another.

any 94+ axle will work. I like my 2 peice ones much easier to install i would think oh and nice wheels ;)

kotomile 09-01-2007 08:49 PM

any ol' 94+ axle? Even the one piece ones (there are 1 piece axles 94+, right?)?

If I wanted to keep it the same, which years have the two-piece axles?

edit - wheels aren't mine, those are 17s and go on my friend's minitruck.

How bad is it mushroomed? Post picture please. It may be salvageable.

Braineack 09-01-2007 09:37 PM

use can reuse your 1.6L ones. what part is bad? the only difference between the 1.6L and 1.8L axles is the flange for the diff, the rest is interchangable....

so for example, you could pull the diff flange off all four axles and reattach the 1.8L ones onto the 1.6L axles and call it a day.

kotomile 09-01-2007 09:38 PM

I don't know how bad, mechanic brother-in-law tried to save it best he could but was sad to report it was too far gone. I don't have a picture, I'm just taking his word for it.

:rly:

the threads for the axle nut, I believe, is the damaged part.

so if I (read: he) makes a frankenstein of the two that'd work, mmm?

kotomile 09-02-2007 12:40 AM

Also, I linked him to this thread in his email. What's the easiest way to go about this? Just replace the inner part (toward diff) like you said, Brian? Has anyone done this?

The threads can be salvaged with a 20mm x 1.5 die cheaper than a new shaft.

Yes, on my current setup I have my 1.6L hub sections on the 1.8L axles.

since the axles I recieved were without the ABS gears.

Back up a sec. With a 1.8 diff installed into a '90-'93 car, assuming the diff has the '94-'95 stub shafts in it, the 1.6 half-axles can be used?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! :crx:

I bought my 1.8 diff and axles from two places. The diff had the early stub axles in it, but I removed them and used a set of '97 one-piece axles that I bought separately. And those things were a royal pain the ass to install! You mean I could have kept the early 1.8 stubs and bolted by existing 1.6 axles to them?

yeah wtf are you saying scot

Braineack 09-02-2007 03:17 PM

No, the 1.6L axles couldn't just be used, as the flange that bolts them to the 1.8L stubs is different.

however, everything execpt the flange is the exact same. so the hub side is the same and the length of the axle itself is the same.

Take my situation for example: I bought '94 axles that weere supossed to have abs gears. they didnt. So I remvoed the hub side of the 1.8L axles and installed my 1.6L hub sides to the 1.8L shaft. Instant 1.8L ABS axles.

akaryrye 09-02-2007 03:37 PM

Um I say that you need to get a grinder out and fix them axles. Machine shop has a tap to clean the threads if you need. Why they used such soft metal ??? is beyond me.
