YES, you can have it all....full carbon ability to HOLD all the power (300 Ft/LBs!) but with a pedal that feels like stock! You will feel the difference coming off every corner.
Smooth engagement!
The Race version is a single disc carbon/carbon clutch with a billet aluminum flywheel. It uses a stock style clutch cover but the friction plate is a light weight Billet Aluminum piece that saves another 3 to 4 pounds. The lighter the disc the less wear and tear on the trans syncros! Carbon has to rub against itself so this new friction plate has a carbon surface screwed into it. The disc is carbon on both sides, which makes for very smooth engagement. The flywheel is aluminum in the Race model and Steel in the Street model and uses the same style carbon inserts as the friction plate. By building the clutch this way it is completely rebuildable by the customer out in the field. All they have to do is install new carbon pucks in the flywheel and friction plate and replace the disc at a cost much less than a new unit.
BRIAN'S APPLICATION NOTES: This is the clutch and flywheel combo we use in our 2007 supercharged MX5 racer and our 2.5 conversion 2006. Pedal feels much like stock clutch, no heavy pedal here yet it works great for those with 12psi and more! This is a great choice for those who are stock hp now but planning to race or add boost. All the clamping ability of a full race clutch but as friendly to drive as stock replacement.

Will vouch for this clutch being amazing. People who drive my car are surprised the stock clutch can hold the power I'm making, then I have to tell them its actually a pimpy $900 clutch and flywheel. With all the hard launches it sees it doesnt seem to get much wear, and if you **** up and over heat it it recovers pretty quick.

aluminum flywheel is 7.4lbs, steel is 14.4lbs, a normal fidanza 1.6 is 7.6lbs. But what really shows is the weight of the clutch and flywheel package; 15, 22, 19.6 respectively. I personally dont see the need for the street kit to exist, the clutch is so mild manner even with the aluminum flywheel. I dont hear the extra gear noise that speedsport warns about for the alumnium but I cant hear it over the interior panels vibrating off each other due to my awr mounts.

Some (ACT recipe) achieve their torque capacity with stiff pressure plates, while leaving the disc street-friendly. This keeps the clutch action smooth/linear but makes the clutch pedal much stiffer. Not fun in traffic/around town, OK on the highway... because you aren't using the clutch
Others (Exedy recipe) keep the OE-like pressure plate and increase torque capacity with more aggressive disc materials. This keeps the clutch pedal effort down but the engagement of the clutch becomes more on/off, with a smaller range of pedal movement between engaged/disengaged. Once you get the hang of it in your own car, you can drive it pretty well, but starting from a stop is always a little jerky and forget about giving the keys to a friend/family member without them coming back saying your clutch is impossible.
With just about every clutch friction material out there, you have to take one of the two approaches above to handle lots of torque. Really gnarly clutches combine both strategies. There is just one material that doesn't play by those rules....
The magic in the carbon on carbon clutch is it doesn't have to make either of the compromises above. It doesn't need a stiff pressure plate to hold the surfaces together so pedal effort remains like stock and the engagement of the carbon is smooth and linear - just like stock. Like Leafy said, it feels like a stock clutch in every way but can handle 300 ft-lbs.

The other bit of magic that the carbon clutches have is that between the material and how much of it there is between the mostly rigid metal gives a nice bit of flex in the coupling between the motor and trans to take up those nasty torsional impact loads like a sprung hub clutch have, without having a sprung hub.

speedsport lists the rebuild kit price as $400 something.
1 season of 4k+ clutch slip launches on slicks (call it like 150 of them) and slipping it to creep up the trailer and I couldnt measure the amount of wear on the friction disk, it measured the same thickness as it did when I got it based on my calipers.
The only downside I can find is that its not a 5.5" twin disk made with the same material on a spoked out aluminum flywheel thats closer to 10lbs total for the same money.

Lifespan is as of yet basically unknown because nobody has been able to wear one out yet - I believe Brian probably has the most time/track mileage on his and after several years he is still on the original friction surfaces.
One customer bought a spare set of the replacement surfaces when he bought the clutch and flywheel just to have them handy down the road. He hasn't used them yet as far as I know. Nobody has contacted us to buy more yet, and these have been selling for years now.

The original of these carbon/carbon units is still in our supercharged 2007 on original pucks with many seasons and hundreds of high rpm 300hp clutch dumps. Thus, have had two customers order the replacement pucks just to have them handy....but nobody has yet reported wearing out their original set.
The Street exists because the Race is so light that an older trans will tend to rattle in street use, noise that the heavy stock unit damps so you never hear it. Some folks are sensitive to that, some are not, but older the trans the more you can expect some noise with the ultra light Race unit. I have another of the Race units in my 2006 daily driver with 2.5 conversion and I do get some clutch rattle with the old 5speed transmission in that 2006.
