Rotaries sounds the worst at idle. A pissed off weedwacker. And if they are running rich they back fire and it sounds like a gun shot. We have a couple that autocross regularily and I hate being in grid behind them.
It seems to me that If there are only 3 moving parts ( I think) in a rotory then they would last longer than a conventional piston motor. I see people replacing their motors in those things every 50 thousand miles. Im stumped.

Not all rotaries sound like that at idle. My rx-7 sounded nothing like that and idled fine. That car obviously has a large port (really big street port or bridgeport). Usually bridgeported rotaries sound like that, very lumpy at idle.
