Rotaries do nothing but irritate me- they sound a lot like snowmobiles to me. EXCEPT for the Mazda IMSA GTP race car. That was sweet.

Rotaries sounds the worst at idle. A pissed off weedwacker. And if they are running rich they back fire and it sounds like a gun shot. We have a couple that autocross regularily and I hate being in grid behind them.

It seems to me that If there are only 3 moving parts ( I think) in a rotory then they would last longer than a conventional piston motor. I see people replacing their motors in those things every 50 thousand miles. Im stumped.

The weak link in a rotary engine are the apex seals, those are pretty much the only thing that can go wrong with a rotary that would need a engine to be rebuilt.

These folks sell a kit. http://www.mazsport.net/html/index.html A guy who autocrosses at the same club I do has the prototype, 13B turbo. Installation looks very clean and runs well.

that's a gawdawful amount of dough to stick a rotary in - and you still have to buy the engine

The 13B probably weighs damn-near what the B6 does. You might move a little of the weigh back, though, given how short the 13B is.

Not all rotaries sound like that at idle. My rx-7 sounded nothing like that and idled fine. That car obviously has a large port (really big street port or bridgeport). Usually bridgeported rotaries sound like that, very lumpy at idle.
