Went Jetskiing with my buddy today. . .
he has a 03 honda turbo jet ski. Rough mod list includes: autronic ECU larger injectors bigger turbo custom intercooler MSD coils Upgraded impeller Upgraded Titanium lifter springs We swapped back and forth between that and his dads run of the mill jet ski HOLY FUCK. I have never been on a jet ski that pulled so hard. This thing is NUTS. you punch it, wait about a half second and boost comes in so strong you have to hold on tight. The thing is just crazy fast, and with the impeller there is no cavitation, it just gets up and go as if it was on drag slicks and a prepped track. I gotta say, the original owner put some serious cash in this thing. We ran it at 10 PSI most of the day, and brought it up to 22 PSI. Its a strange thing hearing that turbo. I had my gf on the back at one point and she was going nuts trying to hold on. At 24 PSI this thing is around 300 HP. INSANE. I used to work at a Yamaha dealer, and rebuilt a Waverunner last summer. They are boosted with a Rotrex. Funny though, it says "HKS" on the compressor housing. But it is a Rotrex. Looked big too... at least a C30-74. It only runs at 8PSI and makes 220hp. It would be sweet to up the boost on it. But it's driven right off the crank so that's not possible. I can't imagine a turbo though, having the boost hit like that. Must be nuts.

A friend of mine in Key West has one of those. I'm pretty sure it is still on the stock turbo, but even so....it's insane to ride.

I think the stock turbo from the factory was 160. Most are much less
|
Just think of it in motorcycle terms. A lot in the 100 range, plus or minus 50 depending on their advertised performance, roughly. I've always wanted to build a turbo rotary pwc.

The new ones are heavy, some are 1200lbs. Mine is a 450lb 97 seadoo gs 2 seater has 90 hp and is faster under all conditions than every new 150-160hp seadoos I've encountered.
That said there is a guy I know who has a faster ski it's a RXTX 255hp factory supercharged seadoo. Those aren't a whole lot faster top speed wise but accelerate like a mofo. I haven't been in water with a honda yet but have seen others. I don't know much about other brands except that most people have had reliability issues with anything but seadoo or honda. I tried the whole I want to turbo my ski argument with the wife and I think the best I'm going to get away with is swapping out the .72L for a .79L (90 -> 110-120hp + more upgradeable) if I can ever kill the little engine. The boosted skis really drink up the fuel don't they. |
jesus that thing must be awesome. I was at lake lanier last year in GA and rented a jet ski, over 40 mph it started to get really choppy. Got it up to 50 I think and thought I was going to die lol. I cant even begin to imagine the pants shitting that would ensue if I played with that thing

What is really fun is crossing sections of the great lakes, I even saw a documentary of two Canadians making a round trip to Russia from Alaska on a couple of 8 year old, 2 stroke machines. |

65mph on a smooth lake is pretty fun. I sometimes wondered what would happen if I were to do an abrupt turn at those speeds. Visions of a rock skipping on water come to mind. |

Granted, I have little basis for comparison, but a Suzuki Hayabusa (1350cc, 190 HP naturally-aspirated) weighs less than 600 lbs wet. Does one of these things actually contain twice as much awesome as a 'Busa? Or are they just ballasting them with depleted uranium? |

the heavier they are, the smoother they ride - and water is SIGNIFICANTLY rougher than a heavily potholed road.
That being said, I rock two of these: Attachment 189098 A 1989 and a 1987 kawasaki 650sx - 2 strokers, probably about 60-70hp each. I'm going to guess their weight at probably 200-240lbs each. Have fun and get your ass kicked doing it!! |
I'd much rather ride a sit down model. Newer ones might be heavy, but they make up for it in power, smoothness and refinement. Plus the really heavy ones are the long ass, 3 and 4 seater models. The smaller ones are still heavy, but not nearly so much.

I see the guys riding the "cadillacs" all of the time, big heavy PWCs. Usually the people that can afford to drop 12k on a PWC want something smooth, comfortable, and fast.
My little stand-ups are not smooth, they are not comfortable, and they are not "fast", though fast is a relative term, and they are generally "fast enough" for me; I'm don't go out to cruise lakes with them. It's really quite entertaining though, to see the guys on the cadillacs rubberneck, slow-down, and even stop altogether in order to watch me play. I think they are jealous because they know that the "fun stuff" that their waverunners can do is limited to this: o Go straight o Turn o Get a couple inches of air if a big enough boat drives by o Get stuck upside down |

Seriously- you can get a brand new Searay / Bayliner / etc bowrider in the 17-18' class the for pretty much the same money, complete with engine and trailer.
