Default 240sx guys, need advice

So if you looked at my rant, my buddy is looking for a 240. I found one on craigslist, and was hoping for advice as to if its a ok deal or not.

It is a 93 with a motor from a 96, 167k miles on the chassis

Totally stock

the passenger door is dented, but just the door

The hatch needs alittle body work done

It is a manual

Title is clean

was just aligned

The interior isent too bad, needs a new door panel

New tires.

New tension rod bushing... (sway bar? idk lol)

If I could grab it for $1800 is it worth it? The engine bay is pretty clean, it seems legit.

How many miles on the swapped motor? Id check to make sure the harness isnt hacked, and everything is oem-ish.

Other than that, sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I love the old hatchback models, and if it has a lower mileage dohc motor than even better. Might be a good candidate for a KA-T.

Also, you might want to make sure the owner isnt a DORIFTO fgt. They **** up their cars more than anyone. Even more than ricers.. haha.

Im asking about the miles on the new motor, and im going to try and see it this weekend.

It would end up being a ka-t if we did get it, that is what my friend wants to do.

Don't post pics of said car or a link to the CL ad... I'd look over the car DAMN good and make sure no corners were cut. You can learn a lot by studying things. Like see if all the bellhousing bolts are installed. If some kid did the swap and lost one he probably isn't gonna go find another to replace it, but someone who cares would have. Are the fluids CLEAN? Does the interior have an odor? Small stuff to look for to get an idea if this is truly a good car.

Yeah, def post pics so we can help. DONT post the CL ad, because someone might jump on it before you (like what happened to Ben, dont ever tell anyone about a smoking deal).

I didn't tell a soul about my Integra when i picked it up for 950, or the hardtop i picked up for 200.. until they were in my hands .

I was being sarcastic. You started a thread asking about what a car is worth but don't post pics. Why, I have no idea.

Try running a compression test on it too if the owner doesn't mind. Always a good idea as it lets you look at the plugs too to see if it's burning oil, blown HG, etc.

QFT, if it is really a fresh motor the owner shouldn't mind you doing all of these.

I have a good friend selling a nice hatch for $6000. Here is the spec list:

Underhood

∙ Redtop SR20DET - 45k miles

∙ S15 Spec-R T28 Dual Ball Bearing Turbo

∙ 22x6x3.5 FMIC, custom

∙ JWT Fuel Package (ECU, Fuel Rail, MSD 50# Injectors)

∙ Greddy Profec B Spec II

∙ Blitz DD recirc’d into a custom aluminum Pepperoni (Zivia member) turbo intake pipe. Very cool because it is recirc’d, but you can still hear the blow off.

∙ Greddy o2 pipe

∙ 5zigen 3” Downpipe

∙ Custom 3" Test Pipe

∙ HKS Hyper 85mm Cat back Exhaust

∙ Nismo Motor Mounts

∙ Black Magic Electric Fan Setup (needs fan controller, but can be switched on from cabin)

∙ HKS Super Power Flow Intake

∙ Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump

∙ Nissan 300zx Fuel Filter

∙ Greddy Full-Auto Turbo Timer (not hooked up)

∙ Odyssey PC680 dry cell battery

Drivetrain & Suspension

∙ Exedy Stage 2 Clutch

∙ Cusco Lightweight Flywheel

∙ Apexi 8-Way Adjustable Shocks

∙ JDM KG/MM Springs; Front 6.6 Nm (370lb/in) (2” drop), Rear 5.2 Nm (290lb/in) (1.6” drop)

∙ Cusco Camber Plates

∙ F&R Suspension Techniques Sway Bars

∙ Front & Rear Strut Tower Bars

∙ Silvia Front Brakes, Driveshaft, and LSD

∙ Bridgestone Racing Rims 16x7 F / 16x8 R

∙ Brand New Falken Ziex

∙ Kyokugen lug nuts

∙ Set of steelies with 2 brand new tires and 2 at 50%

Body & Exterior & Interior

∙ VIS Carbon Hood (finish is worn out)

∙ JDM Personal Steering Wheel (worn) w/ Nismo Horn Button

∙ JDM 180sx front seats (perfect condition – NO rips)

∙ Sony Head Unit (old)

∙ 4 Polk / Momo 4x6 plates

∙ Infinity Basslink sub

∙ JDM gage cluster (7500 RPM tach)

Uninstalled Extras

∙ Canadian s14 front seat belts and black trim pieces (auto seat belt eliminators)

∙ Brand new brakes for all four corners (4 Brembo Blanks and Carbotech Bobcat pads)

∙ F&R Stainless Steel brake lines

∙ Circuit Sports catch can

∙ HKS valve springs (was planning on doing JWT S4 cams)

∙ Nismo extended lugs bolts

More stuff

∙ A/C hooked up and works when charged, but has leak and is not charged now

∙ Power steering works great

The Good

∙ SoCal car, NO RUST ANYWHERE!!! Not even on the hatch! Not on any body panels! The car is not my daily driver and hasn’t seen rain in at least 3 years.

∙ Only Approx 120k on body

∙ Title in hand

The Bad

∙ Body is not beautiful (I would say 6-7 out of 10), normal Nissan dings, very shallow dent the size of a hand on the passenger side. Kink on edge of front passenger side fender. This fender was re-sprayed before I bought the car (although not to my knowledge at the time), and jerk owner did not have it sanded nor primed, just sprayed over top of the paint. Some of the paint has peeled off.

∙ Suffers from the common 240 battery drain problem. Definitely the alternator, I have done a battery drain test with a multi meter and when I pull the alternator fuse, the battery drain stops. Don’t know if it is just a short or if the whole alternator needs to be replaced.

∙ Electric fan is wired to the head light up/down button. I don’t know why. The previous owner did this and it is stupid. A fan controller from Phase 2 is cheap and would make life easy. Although the only time I have ever needed the fan was in dead stop traffic.

∙ Sony CD player is temperamental.

∙ No front inner fender liners

∙ Blower fan just started making funny noise

I advise you to stay away from that spray bombed nightmare posted earlier. Sorry I must have missed where you posted your budget amount. I figured I'd point you towards a good deal. The costs of building a nice 240 add up quick and you can save a lot of money by just buying a clean car with quality parts already installed right off the bat. The stock '93 coupe that my Dad and I started building in summer '07 is up to a $14,000 project so far...

Cardriverx: Its really hard to tell if that car is a good deal or not. It could cost you a whole lot more JUST to get it in good daily driver condition. Not to mention paint etc. I'm not saying that car is not a good deal, I'm just saying approach it with extreme caution. The damn thing is 3+ colors. 80% of the time cars like that are shitbuckets. I would at the very least do a compression check, and a carfax before i even thought about buying. Then I would make sure to test drive it and listen for odd noises, and check all the small **** to see if it all works.

Still it is a decent price, and if all checks out could be a great project.. Just remember to add in paint/body work to the cost of the car. After you add in all that you might just be better off going with something that is clean and oem. Or something clean and swapped already. I would shy away from anything that is KA-T'd already.. unless you KNOW it was done right. Many idiots out there that think they can slap on a turbo and go.

If I was going to start with a blank slate, it would damn well be a clean blank slate.

Honestly if I was in your position, I would save up a bit more and pick up something like what paNX just posted.

Good luck.

The way it sits in the pictures and with the specs, its not worth $1800. Maybe more like $800. Door panel off, spray bombed, rust, high miles, etc. Keep looking, we still have good S13's left in the philly region.

Is that RTV on the disty (and front cover, and hoses, and plug wires...)?

What's with the wiring on the fuel rail?

I dunno, I'd be REAL wary of that car.
