40 gig PS3
I'm new to the next gen consoles, so I'm a bit confused about them. What does the 40 gig mean? Is it 40 gigs for downloaded game storage, or is it some BS where you have to have 60 gigs to play certain games? Is the extra 20 worth $100? I don't care about backward compatibility or a few less USB ports.
For those of you who have them, how long do the batteries in the controllers last? Does the wireless internet work well? I'm really looking forward to online play, but my router isn't the strongest. Is there any chance the price will drop again after x-mas? I really want it now, but I can wait. |
dunno about the rest, but as for controllers, i just bought some rechargeable batteries for my wii controllers and always keep some charged when it runs out, better than buying the controller recharging stands i think
|
1. yes, it's for storing downloaded games and movies. no, 20gb extra is not necessary.
2. a long time. 3. yes 4.dunno, prolly not. |
If you want to play PS2 games you need to get the 60 before its gone. (what i am debating right now, but i dont have any PS2 games and I am not sure if I care)
Other than that get it, and buy an external later if needed. |
Oh note that you get less USB ports with the 40 and no card reader. For me, $100 is worth the extra 20-40 gigs, card readers and usb ports.
|
I had an XBox360 with a 20gig hd, then it died and I got a 120gig Elite. I have overrun 20gb quickly with XBox arcade games (like 6 of them) and massive amounts of downloadable content for Forza2 and PGR3. It's fast and easy to suck up memory with content alone, I'm glad I got a 120gb drive now. I'll be waiting until Sony pulls it's head out of it's ass and drops the larger PS3 to a much more reasonable price point.
|
What is the card reader for?
Chris |
part for part the PS3 is much cheaper than the Xbox, PS3 just didnt come out with all the different models yet, but i bet we will see em.
|
card reader is for stickin your digital camera memory stick into. or to transfer files to and fro without a network.
the wireless controllers last long time. plus you can plug in the USB and play and charge and stuff. |
So the bigger PS3's wont be backwards compatible i was under the impression that all would be backwards compatible.
|
From what I read the 40 gig is the only one that can't play PS2 games. I already have a PS2, so I don't need it. As for the card readers, I will only use it to play games, so I don't need those.
So 40 gigs will fill up quick? Can I connect a regular external HD from a pc for extra storage? I highly doubt I will download extra stuff, but who knows. It looks like I only need the 40 gig. I still have alot of reading to do. |
Each demo is about a gig, but i just d/l and delete them when your done.

Sweet, looks like the 40 gig will be just fine for me. Think I should buy one now? $400 seems about as low as they will go for at least a while (GT5 isn't due until 08). If I remember the first X-box dropped $100 after x-mas though didn't it?
Gran Turismo 5 is the only reason I'm buying one at the moment. I haven't had a chance to reveiw any of the other games. Has there been an official answer if you will have to buy the cars and tracks individually? I can't find a real answer. |
Get an XBox 360. Then there will actually be games to play.
-Mike |
Ok I have had both. Xbox sucks. PS3 is soo much better.
|
|
the ps3 hdd is user upgradeable I believe. Just buy a huge ass hdd on newegg?
|
PS3 will have games in time, they just got off to a really bad start.
I have heard alot of people saying the 40 gigs are coming back. The only reason I doubt the claims is because they use the same drive and main chip. If it doesn't work, I can just take it back. |
that's like saying "all girls are ugly" but then noting that the sample size was only those that were found within 10 feet of Loki were counted. here's an intelligent comment from that site: "stupid belgians probably put waffles in the disc slot amirite" haha |

OK so 40% of the PS3 40gig consoles sold at one store (chain?) in a small country with a population of ~10.5 million is the problem.

i thought the 20giggers were the ones that played ps2 games? *boggle*
|
i bought the 60 gig for 499 and a week later the 80 gigs dropped to 499.......but oh well. but no the extra 20 gig is not worth the money. plus PS are working on building new 100 gig add-on hard drive for a little over 100 bucks. so i would wait for that to be produced cause that will def be worth it.
|
and oh yea miataspeed, GT5 (GTHD) comes to stores in less than a month (december 1)
|
i thought 08?
|
gthd and gt5 are two different games
|
i see it now. Rage is right . they are 2 diff games. well HD has a release date of 12/01 and for 5 i cant seem to find a release date????

Part for part it's cheaper? Is that why it was $700 on initial roll out as opposed to the $400 for the 360? That's some weird economics. |
$700? It's $400.
We've already had this thread. |

-Mike Thank you for your fanboy comments, but they really solve nothing in this post. Please have your tubes tied so you cannot reproduce and continue to plague our society. Storage space is a premium on PS3.. Each demo is approximately 1-2 GB. Save data for some of the games is about 1-2 GB. I have a 60GB system, and I frequently delete demo's and HD video trailers and I'm about 50% full. Keep in mind I have 2 saved oblivion games which is approximately 2ish GB each. Having a pretty big library of games I would say half of my storage is saved games. I will be looking in the future to expand my storage in some way. |
oblivion saves take up a lot of space or having 50 jillion of them takes up a lot of space?

|

|

"No, the saved games and the game cache are separate. The cache is in Game Data Utility and is about 4.5 GB in size. The saved games are in Game Data Utility and are about 2 to 4 MB. Note that there is a smaller file related to oblivion in your Game Data Utility, this is most likely your game settings." BTW for everyone's info who has a PS3.. I HIGHLY recommend ratchet and clank.. so much fun. |
anyone know of a ps3 controller thats more in the shape and config of the xbox 360 controller?

go price a xbox with wirless and hddvd with wirless controllers and rechargable batteris. Oh and include your xbox live login.
BTW: All XBox 360 controllers are wireless. Even the steering wheel. |
I said comparable. Fine, my n64 is better cause its $30 c'mon man.
with wirless and rechargable batteries = $$. Lbs per lbs ps3 is better. And give it time it will kick the xbox butt. The only toss up is hd-dvd, but with $100 players I will buy an hddvd player when blu ray fails and it will fail. |

Well I did a TON of reading and everyone said 40 gigs just wasn't enough space after a while. I went ahead and bought the 80 gig motorstorm combo. I also picked up Resistance: fall of man, and pre-ordered Assassins creed for my g/f. I've heard alot of good things about Ratchet and Clank, but they didn't have any in stock.
I also bought Best Buys 2 year extended warranty. I normally don't buy them, but my first PS2 had that optical drive failure. I think $80 to cover 2 years is better than a screw up in a new console which costs $500 to replace. Overall I am really impressed so far. I just set up my online account, I was suprised it was free. The actual console is alot nicer than I thought it would be. It's heavy as hell! The on/off button and eject button are awsome, you just brush your finger over them. The controller is meh. I love the design, always have, but they removed the rumble! Why?! I haven't used sixaxis yet, but I doubt it was worth the trade. I really like that it charges with the USB port, I HATE buying batteries. It is super light though, which I like, but it does feel sort of cheap. I honestly think the PS3 quick reference manual weighs more than the controller. Sorry for the long post, I'm just really happy with it. I was playing my friends 360 last week, and yeah PS3>Xbox360. Just give it time. I'm off to go pickout my 5 free Blu-ray movies in high def, so I can watch them on my 19" low res tv. |
funny, i just bought the 60 gig again for the hardware backwards compatibility, you can upgrade the HD later if you need more space. PLus with the 60 you get a free controller from best buy. If you get a 60 gig from walmart you get a free contoller and a free game
Software emulation scares me. |
The 80gig is said to only be 85% backwards compatible, but I tried the few PS2 games I would ever keep playing and they work. To be honest though I won't play any of them, and if they don't work in the PS3 I still have my PS2.
The free controller would be nice, but I'm waiting until they put the rumble back in. I've heard it's going to be put back in, and when/if it is I'll buy 2. |
yeah not till spring of '08 supposedly you can buy em from overseas, but i would be happy with an aftermarket controller

nope, ps3 is beating xbox and is closing in on wii.
lbs for lbs its cheaper, meaning capability for capability it cheaper. Get a dictionary look the words up, comprehend it, then come back. |
I thoroughly enjoy my x360, and I love xblive. However I purposely bought a x360 premium with the ring of death because I knew that they extended the warranty for it to 3 years, and the guy I bought it from didn't. Paid $100 for everything, and then sent it out. Got back a brand new one from MS a week later. Can you pull that off with the PS3 ;)
|
i guess not:dunno:
I have had both, i didnt like the xbox. So it could have been free, but then i would have just sold it to someone, or stuck it in a closet. |
:P, I don't buy games I just use my gamefly subscription. With Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, and some of the other games coming out I think I'll be ok. I honestly don't care about the sony vs ms vs nintendo stuff. I got it for cheap and its fun. Some of the live arcade games you can buy are fun as hell too, especially when you only have like 30min to play something.
I had the Wii but after beating Zelda it wasn't fun anymore. They really should have made mario kart a launch title, I would probably still own it today. I've been thinking about buying an old xbox to mod again because I miss my old one. I still have my old 500Gb hdd from it laying in my closet filled with all the games and emulators I would ever need. |

Yeah, they're flying off the shelves. |
I didnt even know there was a PS magazine. Someone needs to stop drinking the coolaid.
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php From day 1 of each console to end of first year, PS3 has pretty much kept up with XBOX. |
seems to be about a 3% difference in sales at the end of year one.
|
Filter the chart by country and the data is much more interesting.

Ok, so I guess the links both you and I posted didn't mean anything. I'll try to find the source, but XBox360 just outsold PS3 in Japan like I posted earlier. You come off as a fanboi with the way you're arguing about this.
Edit: also, don't get all pissed off at me because you're wrong. PS3 is not outselling XBox360 and it shows even on that chart you posted. |
I dont know WTF you are talking about, and I dont know what the fuck a fanboi is.
I have had both systems. Both have sold the same amount (give or take 1.5%) within the first year. Feature for Feature PS3 is cheaper. I dont know what you're arguing |
