I am leaning very heavily in the direction of a 996 at this point. I've always wanted a 911, anyway. Just always has this generic fear of the cock-o-meter. But my recent experience mirrors Clarkson's, in that the cocks seem to be migrating into the Audi camp.

I've seen 996's for sale with the Euro M030 suspension already installed.
And you could make your own metal-flakes-in-oil-detector cheap!

2002+ 3.6 Carrera 2 that comes with the wider turbo body and track, GT3 bodykit and factory sport exhaust/tubi + M030&220 ! Maybe cherry on top of the cake, GT3 seats. No Silver!
You could do better, but real GT3/GT2 cost more than arm.

One thing to add is that PDC on Porsche is rare, so just know that you'll be buying original or even more expensive wheels.

I know one of the biggest pitfalls to avoid with buying cars like that is, because you can buy it for 65% off the original price doesn't mean that the service will be 65% cheaper. That's a big concern for me because I am (A) value conscious and (B) don't like to work on cars.

The biggest hurdle for me seems to be name premium. As much as I am enamored with the idea of the 911... I don't think I could stomach paying the same amount for a 20-year old 911 Turbo that you would pay for a 10-year old Viper or a 5-year old Z06.

Y U no like Silver?

I've actually been putting a lot of thought into this.

On the one hand, my intuitive desire when it comes to convertibles is always red. Thus far, 3 of my 5 ragtops have been red (though I must admit, this is by coincidence rather than design.)

On the other hand, a red 911 is both stereotypical and undignified. Silver seems like more of a German color.

On the gripping hand, as a general rule, I detest silver / white on the grounds that they are soulless and bland.

On the thrusting hand, I saw a 996 Cabrio at lunch today which was a sort of very dark blue, and that color works very well on it.

For $25k I can (it seems) get a fairly nice 10 year old 911, or I can get a brand new Kia Sedona.

My problem is this completely irrational fixation on the "alpha trim" of some car models. That is, it would be hard for me to imagine buying a 3-series below a 335i or M, a non-turbo 911 or non-S Cayman/Boxster, a non Z06 C6, etc. Even though the mid-level trims of the cars might be perfectly adequate, I just have a hard time warming up to the "lesser" versions.

An exception might be a 930 with the wide body and a higher output (~300 BHP) non-turbo engine considering its ~2800 pound curb weight.

I want a 996.
