To me, the 90's vintage SL500 looks like a Chrysler LeBaron mated with a Fox-body Mustang.
No, if I were to buy a Merc, it'd be an SLK.

No, I have not. My nickname here at CBS NY is "Hawaiian Shirt Joe" (apparently this is not considered common attire in lower Manhattan.)

I was thinking 2003+ SL.
Still, I do like the look of the '03, I like the PRHT, and I think I could probably live with only 340 ft/lbs. Any idea if the 5-speed autos in these cars are any good? That seems to be the predominant transmission in them.

I'd love an LS-swapped 968 or 928, but Joe says no swaps in Cali.

Besides, you've got the wrong basic idea here- I don't want an old car with an engine swap. The point of this thread is to find something civil and refined.

DeLorean's PRV V6 is sad, same piece of steel you find from Volvo 264.
Well theres still Nissan Z350 with lovely soundtrack. Is it teen car there? Or it's older siblings Wankel madness with RX-8? How about supercar you can really dd, Honda NSX? Proper looks and engine that sings and lusts to be charged. |

Wankel madness with RX-8? How about supercar you can really dd, Honda NSX? Proper looks and engine that sings and lusts to be charged. The only real gripe I have it that they seem to be retaining their value rather well. Most of the ones I'm finding are in the low $30s and up (a few examples in the $20), and for that, it's still an "old car". No, I think I'd take an SL500 or an SLK320 over an NSX. Porsche vs. Merc... |
l'VE GOT THE ANSWER
\http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q65hec4bcZ.../acura-nsx.jpg You'll live it, it's light weight, relatively under powered, reliable (more so then any Merc I'll bet), relatively cheap and it's technically a supercar. Edit: Somebody posted before me and it's already been k.o.'d. Porsche over MB. But, think about the upkeep on the porsche vs the NSX! Use yo math skilz Perez |
Then if it's final round Merc against Porsche, try the butt ugly 993 before you go with "soccer mom 996" They hold their values really well and being such anchient prehistoric DNA thing, their been hooned to perfection. Just go with Carrera 4S in dark red/maroon and you cant go wrong. Atleast with Porsche you dont want to stab yourself into face everytime you walk to it.
Having live'd with both contenders I'd steer clear from modern Merc's unless you find shoveling money to fire nice hobby, the quality from they where know'n was abandon long ago in 90's. All this compared to the basic 1000$ to any job Porsche's that atleast are well made (exept 996 interior that looks like its been stolen from 80's) is full win for the one with engine on the wrong end. |
I'd get the porsche.
|
When I see a Porsche I look at it, when I see an NSX I stare. That is one damn good looking car in person. I think they have a 300k club.

I understand the prejudice against Hawaiian shirts, but I have no idea who is in that picture or what they are supposed to represent.
