It could be a receiver for a removable winch. Receivers also make great recovery points because they are tied into the frame.

 

I'm awarding you a cat for posting the proper brand of winch.

 

 

I can imagine: cargo carrier, winch, trailer launching/maneuvering, step platform, etc.

Pray tell, did it also have a rear hitch?
