In the production of vinyl records, a Mother plate is an intermediate disc which is a positive replica of the original acetate or copper master. It is used to produce negative Stamper plates, which are then used to press the finished records.

Because it is a positive copy, a Mother can be played on a regular record player. This is typically done only once, to validate the quality of the finished Mother before it passes down into the production process.

Stampers are made by depositing a thin film of nickel or similar material onto the mother, which is then peeled off.

And what you have just shown is exactly what I do at work to make reflective products. Instead of records, plastic sheeting is molded, then cut into the shapes needed by the customer.

Carpenters work to 1/16 of an inch, Machinists work to .001", I do my work in millionths of an inch and seconds of degrees.

Wouldn't a more accurate statement be that you control the machines that work to that level of accuracy?

No. I do the design drawings. Someone else programs the machines, and yet another person actually operates the machines. All that to cut a master. Then there are electro-formers, and we ship the tools someplace else that makes actual products.
