Just like the belts which connect the crankshaft to the transmission on some Harley Davidson motorcycles, the drive belts on old Roots superchargers, etc.

I'm dead already...

Still, the motor in the photo is clearly a brushless 3-phase AC motor.

Why is it using such thick gauge wire? An AC 3 phase motor of that size would typically be no greater than 5hp. It's probably drawing 5 FLA. These motors typically ouput a low torque at a slow shaft speed, so that seems pretty useless.

It could be brushless DC. But i don't know much about those, i think some have 3 leads for the 3 / 6 commutators.

Brushless DC motors are rare in automotive applications, as the permanent magnets add a lot of weight and size. That housing looks like a conventional AC induction motor to me.

It's hard to judge the size of that motor given the context, but it looks like it might be a Curtis AC50. Here's the spec sheet for that motor:

It makes a respectable amount of torque at 0 RPM, and delivers peak HP at what is probably the point where the engine is running out of airflow.

I see. What a unique application.

I'd assume just hook a couple of them to the drivetrain.

I struggle to see any other explanation for the cog belt setup.
That belt would be unpleasant under load at high rpm.

Or, I could be wrong.

Edit before I am publicly humiliated:

I guess I am wrong.

So there.

i like when you say things, even when you are wrong.
My phone takes shitty pictures, but I won $75 in a costume contest today.

what am I focusing on? the unnecessary splitter support?

TurboTim 11-01-2016 10:27 AM

???

I'm pretty sure splitter supports have been 'cool' for a while.

In unrelated news, I usually go to a nearby pastry shop for breakfast.

And, I share my food with the less fortunate.

The turnbuckles are attached to bumper.

I'm interested in what else is going on here though. I see some interesting bracketry and some sort of tube structure in there. The splitter/turnbuckle thing may be idiotic but it's possible they are trolling us and hiding what is really going on there, or at least I hope so.

Intercooler from a 2016 Focus RS that a buddy let me have. Test fit on Saturday but it looks like a good fit from my initial measurements.
