^ We live in a world in which programmable microcontrollers are so commonplace that it's practical to include them in trinkets such as that.
This, of course, has downsides, as well. Such as the over-complexification (and subsequent repair-proof-ness) of nearly everything...
I assembled the first of the new boards yesterday. No microcontrollers, just copper doin' copper stuff.
