Well fuck me, that car is amazing. I really don't understand it though, are the electric motors just there to make up for the turbo lag?

Those things are suicidal bro. They just jump out in front of cars all the time for no reason at all. Like literally they will wait by the side of the road and then at the last second jump out and get hit.

The electric motors are there to help deliver a more even torque line throughout the engine rpm. A 1.6L at 12k rpm is a very peaky motor. No way around it. The electric motors on the other hand have a fairly flat torque that falls off with rpm. Also while u're driving nicely and dont need the power from the gasoline motor, the gasoline motor just idles and keeps the batteries charged up almost like a generator.

Over ten degrees off. No wonder the engine feels like shit, idles at 60 kPa, and is getting 17 MPG.

I also re-tested the compression with a decent quality gauge this time. The numbers were nice and even- between 140 and 155 all around, right near the bottom end of the spec.

Correct, hes using the height gauge to find the TDC.

I feel like that may be overkill.

Not really, thats probably the easiest way to find it if your markings are off. A .001" dial indicator isn't that precise by comparison. At my old job we used to have one that did a .010" 360 degrees sweep.

It is not overkill if you are re-indexing a pulley which has slipped. Achieving that degree of precision by feel is impossible.

This is a common failure mode.

The pulley is not one solid piece of metal. It's two pieces, an inner and an outer, bonded together with a rubber ring.

As the rubber ages and hardens, it becomes possible for the two halves of the pulley to slip out of alignment. The inner part is still properly aligned with the crank (a woodruff key and pin ensure this), but the outer part is not aligned with the inner part.

This also means that all of the careful work I did optimizing the ignition map is completely for shit.

If i design a MT 3d model will people buy it from shapeways? ...possibly a 2-3" keychain model.

Let's not get into 3d printing of guns... because you know... guns are bad.

Besides, there is the gun thread for that.
I bet this guitar sounds like complete shit.

The crank is aligned so that the pulley notch is at the "T" mark on the cover.

The black mark on the pulley indicates where TDC actually is.

Twenty-three degrees. That's how far that little fucker was off.

So, yeah. Miatafolk ought to check their pulleys. Cheap dial indicators and cheap magnetic bases are not expensive.
