I use the ruler, socket extention, and sharpie method.
1. Remove all spark plugs 2. rotate crank till you can firmly press down on #1 piston with extention. 3. lay ruler flat, mark the piston's lowest point. 4. rotate crank, watch mark go up till it cant no mo, starts to drop. 5. rotate crank backwards a tad tiny bit, before it starts to drop.
