American cars I've been lusting after for some reason...

So it's time for a "daily driver". Granted, I have a 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T, and a Benz 190E. But I want a car where I don't have to work on constantly and rides comfortable. I'd figure I can sell those two cars and have enough for a decent downpayment on something more "luxurious".

First one is the Pontiac GTO. Not the "goat" of yesteryear, but the 04-06 models. Everytime I see one on the road, I just think it's the best bang-for-buck cruise missile out there. Two doors, 4 seats, RWD and snarling LS1-LS2 vette engine in the front. What more can I ask for? While in 95degree traffic today with the top down, a black GTO rolls past with the windows rolled up, the universe sign for "Fuck you, I have air conditioning", I can just hear him laughing. A stripped to the bone, no a/c, turbo miata is nice and all but........I'm I getting too old?

Second is, and don't laugh too hard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_LS#2000_-_2002

I specifically like the 02 LSE model. I love squared-off, heavy-looking front end with flushed in fog lights. I see a lot on the freeways and it's a beautiful car.

I can't think of any other affordable v8 cruisers that I can take to Vegas and back in comfort. Any ideas?

Does anbody have any experience with either cars? Thanks.

Buy Phillips GTO, seems like he is always in the mood to sell his.

Al Hounos 06-12-2007 11:07 PM

Chrysler 300C... I've always loved the looks of them. Finally a sedan america can be proud of.

Ben 06-12-2007 11:09 PM

Don't rule out the Caddy CTS. They should be plummeting in price with the 08 revamp coming out soon.

My sister just got one. The LS2 is nice. The Spec-V has the 6.0 and a manual.

Atlanta93LE 06-12-2007 11:17 PM

+1 CTS

Then there is the Pontiac G8 coming...the GXP trimmed version should be a real kick

motherfucking :werd:

480 at the rears supercharged, drop 1k into a cam and long tubes and you could be well over 500 RWHP, like 530.

Doesn't it have the 7.5" rear. If it does, I cannot stop shredding those with my lt1 right now. I am on number 4 now, but I keep getting them for free.

Exhondaman 06-13-2007 03:11 AM

*quietly crosses CTS from list*

It's outta my price range anyways. I'm looking for something in the low to mid 20's.

300C is nice, but it just looks too gawdy for me. I want something a little low-key and unknown. An older Volvo 850R would be a nice find.

fmowry 06-13-2007 07:12 AM

There's an LS 3 houses down from me. Never knew what one was but I do like the low key looks of it. I'm starting to consider powerful family cars now too but keep coming back to '00-01 Audi S4s or an AMG C32 in the low mid 20's price range. Or a Leg GT maybe. I want something with a nice interior where I can put in a nice system and not here the outside world while I'm cranking music with the AC on.

I've driven my friend's SS. The soundtrack and acceleration on the run from 60 to 100 are an absolute pisser, but the mileage is killing him since he drives 30K/yr.

I see a CRX in the background! Must be the grocery-getter :bigtu:

SUV's and BIG sedan's like the Impala are out of the equation.

Phillip, nice price, with the supacharger?

Philip 06-13-2007 10:42 AM

yeah, with the SC and a few other extras like a monaro bumper etc.

Philip 06-13-2007 10:47 AM

hell I'd probably even deliver if you asked nice and cplit part of the expense, or a good hooker in cali.

i dunnnooo about that....

300's were cool for a month, then every poseur had one... they just scream "baller on a budget" to me. I'd rather have a 4-door civic SI.

Yep, the CRX is my daily driver. It is an HF and gets almost 50 mpg. I have had it for over 12 years. You can also see the corner of the bumper of our hail damaged '96 Accord EX in the pic, that is the grocery getter/beater. :bigtu: The TBSS only gets around 16-18 mpg so it doesnt get driven that much. We only put 8K miles on it in the first year.

I can give .02 on a 2002 Lincoln LS V8
My wife and I had one.

Great car, Strong V8.
Comfortable ride, all the electronic gizmos that could be offered back in 02. Rain sensing wipers, HID, memory seats and mirrors, MASSIVE TRUNK, supple leather, yada yada yada.

Couple of issues that we had that the dealer took care of. Both the rear window motors failed causing the glass to drop, and the valve covers started leaking with about 26k miles on the car. Not a big deal either.
At the time it was hard to find oil filters even into 2005. The oil filter was the same filter used on a Jaguar S type 4.0, I think. So, going to your local jiffy lube or auto parts store wasnt really an option back then. Dealer only. IIRC tranny is not serviceable either.

We sold the car and got a Caddy SLS(yeah I am only 33, not 60) for my wife(that car is now gone too).
I would buy another one, but my wife loves her Mini Cooper and I drive the roadster. No need for a third car.

Hope this helps...

Another pretty cool obscure car, if you can find one, is the 1996 or 97 SHO with the V8. It used a small displacement Yamaha V8, I wanna say 3.4L. Torque steer galore. Something like 234hp. Dont remember exactly. They only made them for a couple of years. That was back when FoMoCo was doing the design of cars based on shapes, Taurus(ovals) and the Cougar(triangles). It was a pretty cool car. I had one for about 1 year.

JayL 06-14-2007 10:55 AM

How about a 99-04 Ford Lightning? Fast, cheap to mod and they can tow.

Do not buy a European car, unless it has E30 M3 somewhere in it's title.

The 190E has been a headache since I got it. And you thought Jaguar had electrical gremlins???

Not looking for a truck either.

Phillip, your GTO sounds tempting, I'm going to do more research on it and other cars also.
