100 crunches? what's the point?
My point in saying all that is that thirdgen is in pretty good shape, better then 18-22 y/o's I know. |
I tend toward the opinion that regularly running longer than 5K (or thereabouts, 5K isn't a magic number obviously) has detrimental health effects. That much cardio depresses your immune system and leads to chronic inflammation (both joint and muscle inflammation, as well as organ tissue inflammation).
I much prefer doing shorter, higher-intensity workouts, which studies are showing to just about as effective at improving performance without the huge time investment and detrimental health effects of high-endurance cardio-cased workouts. I do kettlebells, pullups, pushups, the occasional short barefoot (or quasi-barefoot) run, cycling occasionally, and angleball on Saturdays. |
The guy who placed first that ran in 15 minutes something and looked like someone who does P90x everyday was 23. I size people up by looking at then and saying to myself, "if I got in a fight with that guy, what would happen?". I can tell you, I don't think I would want to fight this guy. I mean I would just for $hits and giggles, but I'm 95% certain he would seriously injure me. I most likely have more weight on him due to my BMI, but I will also be 31. So having at least 6 years on someone and not being that far behind them? I'm happy with that.

Jesus christ that's a fast time. Were there many hills or was it an easy course? The only timed 5K I did was around 23minutes, but I never run like I want to anymore. I also prefer distance, but the best I could do two mile was 13:30
|
It was all flat. There was a slight incline before crossing 2 different bridges, but other than that 1/2 was flat pavement and the rest was fine stone abandoned rail road bed.
|
I still can't get over how fast 1st place guy was. I'm running another one next weekend, and he'll be there again. I'm anxious to see what the outcome will be.
|
I ran 19 today in 3 hours. It was 40 degrees and drizzling rain the whole time. Quite miserable, actually.
Running a marathon is a good test of your ability to mental through stuff. You can train for the first 20-22 miles, but it always seems like over that is just a grind, no matter how hard you train. I've read that it's hard on the body, but I would say marathon training is far less damaging than a sedentary life style. |
Yeah that's a seriously impressive time. I ran cross country in High School, our best runner was insane. Fastest time was 15:06. When we practiced on the track his "race" pace was literally my sprinting.
|
The fastest mile ever recorded was something like 3:43? Some guy from Morocco.
Is it racist to say that I doubt that was done by a white guy and that I doubt a white guy will ever run that fast in my lifetime? Is it sexist to say "how come the women's mile record is like 4:20?" I had the boys mile record in 6th grade which was like 1991? I ran in 6:19, but I lost to a girl who ran it in 6:10. |

There are 80 sprinters who have a recorded a legal (ie, not wind-aided) official 100m time under 10 seconds. Of those 80, 76 are of West African descent. Of the other 4, 2 are from other regions in Africa. Of the remaining 2, 1 is from indigenous Australian descent. 1 runner out of the 80 who has broken the 10 second barrier is Caucasian. |
scott and I run a half mile after we lift. every once in a while we run a mile.

Not bad at all. One thing that I do when I run is I try to catch up with whoever is in front of me and try to think that "it isn't that much longer to the finish line, why not give 100%?" Once you see the finish line SPRINT! Another thing is you should be drinking at least a gallon of watter a day 2-3 days before the run. Motovatuon and hydration are important for shuzzle, dont drink alcohol 2-3 days before the event either. You can catch thirdgen in 4 months if you really want to!

Trying to comprehend what you type is like trying to follow what my grandma who has Alzheimer's is saying.

The longest run (more walking) I have done was 21k. I cried for about the last 10k if I remember correctly. It was during training and the only thing I really cared about was not falling behind any one girl. LOL . It was so brutal. I remember just saying "---- this, i would never chase someone for 21k on foot, will just shoot" followed by lots of "this is bs", "f this" etc..
I often ran 1.5 - 5 miles, 1.5 being the preferred. 1.5 for me was 10 min 30, seconds, around there. I think 10:17 was the fastest @ 220lbs 6'3 These days it would take me 2 hours with 1 stop at Burger King to refuel. I became a better runner after I graduated. Suffered bad bilateral shin splints when I first started running on the road. |
