Default Anybody ever run 5k or anything?

Today I entered a local 5k race. I never did any kind of running event in my life, but I do go running around my neighborhood just to keep myself in shape. I am 30 1/2 years old, 175 lbs, BMI: I have no idea.
At the start of the race, I left the line in a nice moderate jog. I noticed that in no time I was 50 yards and increasing ahead of everybody. I thought, "I think I am going way too fast and by the end, I'm going to pay for this and end up getting passed by everyone....better slow it down a notch and save it."
Right around the first mile mark, 2 guys passed me, and about 1 minute later, another guy. That guy looked like he does P90x infomercials. I maintained my hold on 4th place for the rest of the race where I crossed the finish line with a time of 17:38. I was about 20 yards behind the 3rd place finisher. The insanely ripped guy ended up getting first place and finished so far ahead of me that I never saw him cross the finish line. I asked him what he ran and he said, "15 something." I also asked what he runs the mile in. He goes, "best time ever for me was 4:40." 4 minutes and 4 seconds in the mile!!! Seriously?? That's insane!
I feel so refreshed, but I also feel like someone took a baseball bat to my calves.
Are there any fitness junkies here that do marathons or local running events?
I'm thinking for now, 5k is the farthest I want to go.

I am actually glad that there were people in front of me...it made me push harder to keep up with them.
There is another local 5k next Sunday. I'm doin it. I guess you can say I'm getting possibly addicted? If I would've finished near last, I would say "F this Noise", but 4th out of 45 runners? I'm sticking with it.

I had an ex that ran like crazy, about 8 miles a day. She ran marathons though. She said running over 8 or 10 miles is supposed to be really bad for you, and when she ran her long runs her toe nails would fall off.

She said one of the huge things with running is getting the right shoes, she said apparently nikes have a funky toe box for long distance running. I think she ran in new balance or oasics

When I was in high school I actually ran 2 tenths faster in the 40 in an old set of laceless nike shocks, then my dog ate them and they are not available anymore. Never tried anything more than a few miles though.

thirdgen, that is a seriously good runtime. Last weekend I ran a 1.5 mile (about half of a 5k) in 12:10, I'd have ran it faster but I haven't been running for more then a month due to my ankle getting fucked up a few months ago. If you could do 100 crunches in two minutes and 20 pull-ups you could get a perfect 300 on the USMC PFT (Physical Fitness Test).

Probs IRL.

Please go to bootcamp already.

Thirdgen, that is a very legit time. It would put you on a high school varsity level (actually some pretty wicked fast HS runners out there). If you start training for it specifically you could post some crazy times. My best run ever was 8 miles in 52:30. But that was back in my lanky *** high school days of 6'1" 145lbs. Last time I had my AF PFT I threw up all over the place after running a 9:13 1.5 mile (still 6'1", around 190 now).

Not bad at all. One thing that I do when I run is I try to catch up with whoever is in front of me and try to think that "it isn't that much longer to the finish line, why not give 100%?" Once you see the finish line SPRINT! Another thing is you should be drinking at least a gallon of watter a day 2-3 days before the run. Motovatuon and hydration are important for shuzzle, dont drink alcohol 2-3 days before the event either. You can catch thirdgen in 4 months if you really want to!

Congratulations! As part of our fitness challenge, my wife and I are signed up for our first mini-triathlon later this summer and will be doing our first 5K in the fall. She wants to do a Warrior Dash or similar event as well.

Are those shoes the ones that are like toe socks? Like gloves for your feet?

People run 5k? Seems short. I guess if I had a choice between that and something like a half marathon I'd pick that. Either way I don't run for fun.

To get a perfect 300 apparently.

My girlfriend just ran her first half marathon, 13.1 miles for those of you not in the know.

She said over 10 miles is just stupid. Her pace is 10min/mile, and she finished the marathon in 2 hours 23 minutes, cause she walked a bit.

I'm signed up for the cheapest track day ever. 5k at Portland International Raceway. Not till August though.
