Ironically enough I just had mine done last week.

My wife works in the research department at the largest urology clinic in the state, so I obviously had some insider knowledge on who to have clip on my nuts haha. So I can't provide any insight as to how to pick who you want. Also completely free for me as the company writes off all urological procedures for both me and her which was a nice surprise (I'm sure they still billed my insurance though). Also, since other people have mentioned it, my Doctor got both sides done with one incision and one stitch, not with two incisions like others have mentioned. Made for some easy healing.

Regarding the procedure they typically do it under conscious sedation here in VA. Meaning you might be aware of what's going on but you shouldn't remember much of it later. From what I've heard from other people's experience the better the clinic the better the sedation/experience. Since I work in the medical field (ish) I asked what the process was like regarding the sedation. I had a dedicated anesthesiologist during my procedure and got a cocktail of Versed, Fentanyl, and Propofol IV. I don't know if I got hooked up because they knew my wife, but they knocked me out. I might have just been super tired, or I might have been "conscious" but don't remember shit, who knows haha. Versed is awesome for not remembering stuff. But, I had heard stories about slight pinch for the local anesthetic, then possibly some light tugging, then a smell of your vas deferens being cauterized. I didn't have any of that...rolled in, felt dizzy, woke up in recovery. The actual procedure itself took maybe ten minutes. Pre-op was like an hour of sitting and waiting.

Regarding recovery: TAKE A WEEK OFF for guaranteed no-issue recovery. Meaning don't lift shit, don't move shit, don't do shit. Again, I've heard stories of people who go back to doing stuff too soon and then have grapefruits for a few days along with intense pain. I work in an extremely active field (firefighter) and I was able to return to work yesterday after getting it done Monday the 21st. I took the whole seven days sitting on my ass watching movies. It was very hard not to go out to the garage and wrench on stuff, but I think it was worth it to just sit and do nothing for a week. My recovery was a breeze - no pain, no swelling, no discomfort other than accidentally rolling over in my sleep and rubbing the stitch on my shorts or something. If you work at a desk or something, they say you can go back to work in 2-3 days once any discomfort subsides. Obviously in my line of work that wasn't going to happen, but they said I should easily be able to go back after a week and they were correct.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the stitch still being there I feel like they didn't even do anything. Resumed sexual activity after five days and all still works as it used to haha. Now it's 14 weeks of "cleaning out the reserves." They have DIY at-home sperm check kits now, my office signed me up and they emailed me to order the kits 2-3 days after the procedure.

OH, AND MAKE SURE YOU WAIT THE FULL 12-14 WEEKS after before unprotected sex!!! You do two at-home kits for verification of sterility, at 12 weeks and then again at 14. A guy I work with did the 12 week kit, got busy with his wife, and she popped out twins. Gotta suck to go through the procedure and then still end up with another kid or two because you can't follow directions...

Had mine done in 2010... zero short-term or long-term issues. I followed the recovery directions and was good to go on schedule. If anything, I want to have sex more every year... unfortunately the wife is on the opposite program.

I second the get the 2 follow up tests to verify no more active sperm. Wife's dad had his last daughter unplanned because the surgery was not done properly and he did not wait to get tested.

I was told 25-30 shots... i was hopeful at 23... nope, still had swimmers.

My family physician delivered my last child (1984) and performed my vasectomy. No specialists needed.

Bottom line is that men are simpler and more well understood than women, and therefore the side effects of sterilization are lower and more predictable. Better you than her, in other words.

This is eerily timely for me as well.... My twins are 10 months now, my daughter 2.5 years; I'm starting to sleep more and think clearly.
These reports of nether region pains keep making me delay... I should probably get on it before these little monsters weigh 30 lbs and I can't pick up anything for a few days...

It is interesting that one of you reported a libido decrease, I've read from another elsewhere that his libido increased significantly. I guess everybody's different.

On another note, in the event you are pregnant and having your last child, have her tubes tied in the event of a cesarean... they can do it easily while already in there. However, most states have a mandatory time-period prior to the delivery that you can make this request of your doctor. In California, our OB royally screwed us by not telling us this until we asked at around the 2 month mark when she told us we were definitely having a cesarean... and she told us we missed the California deadline by 2 days. I could have slapped her.

Lesson to be learned... at the very beginning of the pregnancy, at the very first appointment, plant the bug with the OB that you WANT a tubal ligation in the event of a cesarean. There are some forms to fill out.

Better question is how long everyone waited for surgery after kiddos. My wife when I mentioned taking a week off and doing nothing gave me a bit of a glare. But then again she’s holding one of our 4 week old twins.

What I'm learning here is that MiataTurbo.net increases you're chances of having twins! We're planning for our second (and final) later this year. I might have take some time off here during the game time. I told my wife I was going to ask her OB if she does vasectomy so I could do a 2-4-1 special at the birth.

I had mine done a little more than a year ago. The first discussion of this came after our second child, who was a girl - first was a boy - rich man's family. We decided to wait 6 months after our first discussion to determine if we were certain we would no longer want children. Our son was an awful sleeper (and still is) and our second child, the daughter, was a terrific sleeper until, coincidentally, 6 months old - right around the time to bring up a vasectomy again. At that time we agreed we were done. I also own a wealth management firm - so I know how much these amazing, beautiful little turds are going to cost me until they graduate college and two will be enough!


The doctor I chose is a client of mine - thought it might be a little weird at first but it wasn't. He is also one of the top rated urologists in our area - so that is hard to overlook. Follow the recommended recovery timeline. Take it easy and you should be fine. I waited as long as possible before confirming the success of the procedure.



I have had no issues since the procedure and recovery. There is some sensitivity for some time after - weeks to a month or two - but nothing since that dissipated.

I was scheduled to get one just after Christmas, but canceled due to important obligations. Actually a combination of work, cold feet, and not wanting swollen balls on New Years.

I did complete a discussion with the doctor to go over pre-op instruction, what to expect, and potential side effects. The only troubling thing he mentioned was in rare cases patients will have such severe pain, they will beg to have a nut removed. Apparently reversing the procedure will not fix the problem.

In his his long career, he had to remove a testicle one time because of nonstop pain resulting from vasectomy.
