Default Welding 101?

For Christmas, my wife bought me a small oxy/acetylene welding set and now I have to learn how to weld...

Any good resources on the Internet or good books you guys can recommend on this subject? I'm a complete welding newb.

I do not think you will be welding anything. Now cutting on the other hand, you are good to go.

grab some metal run some beads and just plain weld **** up. best way to learn wear gloves flannel shirt and pants. once you get to welding in your shop you tend to forget this and sunburn the living **** out of yourself. my dumbass has done this a few times

+1 on taking a class. I had to take a welding and casting class for my major last year and learned a lot.

Hmmm... Never thought about taking a class. That could be fun. I was too nerdy in high school to take a good shop class.

In the meanwhile, I'll just start welding some crap together. I didn't even realize that it came with a small manual that has a basic welding tutorial, read some of it in the crapper this afternoon. It's like welding for 6 year olds... Maybe I'll bring it over to my sister-in-law's and see if her kids can weld up with something.

Best bet is to find a friend who welds and doesn't mind coming over to show you some stuff from time to time. When I first got my Mig welder a friend came over to give me a few pointers. He works on another shift so that was the only time we hooked up but the 15 minutes of hands on in your face was worth it. Yeah, a class would be better but with the Mig a class really isn't a huge requirement once you know what the ***** and stuff does.

(yes, I know my welds would be better with 40 hours of classroom instruction but I don't have time for that)
