Best movie that I have not seen?
Star Wars was good, Indiana Jones was good, Pulp Fiction was good but we have all seen those. What is a good movie that we probably have not seen?
I would say one of my favorites that wasn't really popular was Let It Ride (can't find any good trailers on youtube): Edit: Because I am working night shift tomorrow and have nothing better to do all night I compiled a list of the movies that have been suggested so far (12/20/10 @ 11PM EST): 13th Floor. 13th Warrior 2001: A Space Odyssey A Clockwork Orange A Serious Man Adaptation Alien Any Jackie Chan flick! Anything by Guy Ritchie that ISN'T starring Madonna. As good as it gets Assault on Precinct 13 (I prefer the 1976 original but the '05 remake is good too) August rush Avatar Babe Best in Show Black Dynamite Blade Runner (the long-ass, non-director's cut) Blade Runner. Yeah, the uncut Youtube one is awesome. EDIT: Link fail. Might have to figure out how to do this sometime. Here's the link address. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EceT6...has_verified=1 That said, this is NOT on the "Best you have never seen" list, but was entertaining. |

The movie "Fresh".
This is one of my fav's that not many people have seen before. Little kid is a drug dealer who realizes he doesn't want to grow up like that. Samuel Jackson is his bum dad who he plays chess with but seems to have little connection with. Jackson is teaching him how life is a game of chess. The rest goes from there, but it's very cool how the director/writer use the game of chess as a story board for the movie. Definitely not a typical gangster in the projects movie at all. Very good drama. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/ |

"Cult classic" but well known on the interwebz: Boondock Saints (I gave out at least one copy on VHS).
L4YER CAKE |
The Shawshank Redemption?
|
If you haven't seen any of Kevin Smith's movies, you should.
Dogma, Clerks 1 & 2, etc etc. |
In no particular order:
The Hudsucker Proxy The Royal Tenenbaums Rushmore Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel Blade Runner (the long-ass, non-director's cut) Primer Zardoz (Just kidding. This is the worst movie ever made, but you get to see Sean Connery in a bikini and a giant stone head vomiting guns.) Idiocracy The Roadwarrior & Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (skip the original Mad Max.) Days of Thunder (yeah, I admit it.) The Simpsons Movie South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut |
I dl'd "primer" per a convo we had in another thread, and didn't like it much.
|
13th Floor.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Skin Deep. The Sure Thing. |
Kelly's Heroes. Old Clint movie with lots of stars.
|
Oh, I almost forgot: Das Boot.

Cinema Paradiso. It's in Italian, but worth your effort to read the subtitles.
Best in Show. Yeah, I heard that there were people who haven't seen it yet. |
Momo is german but awesome movie
What dreams may come serius robin williams ftw Pans labarynth pretty damn engrossing |
Harmony Korine creates some fucked up shit ("Kids" anyone?). If you're in a for a dose of good 'ol Americana, I'd highly recommend Gummo:
Between the kids hunting cats to sell to the Chinese restaurant, the guy pimping out his retarded sister and ghastly dialogue, Korine sends a clear message: middle America is a horrifying place. The children scare the absolute shit out of me. |
Original Italian job? Or even the new one if you've been living under a rock.

Joe's recs are great. A few I haven't even heard of and I've watched a few lifetimes worth of movies already. Hudsucker Proxy is a great one as well as the Royal Tenenbaums.
|
Anything on the IMDB 250 list is probably worth watching. Take your pick.
|
Sneakers
The Lost Boys El Mariachi Purple Rain |
Hudsucker and Tenenbaums are definately a couple of my favorite films, though that breed of humor must be an acquired taste (like Materva) as some folks just don't seem to care for them at all.
And Sneakers... good one. Redford's second great hacker movie. |
Just remembered another good one you should see: Human Traffic.
It's a goofy British flick from the 90s, but it's definitely worth watching. |
Anything by Guy Ritchie that ISN'T starring Madonna.
Brotherhood of the Wolf and the Salton Sea. |
Some of my little known favs:
Crash (sex and miatas) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115964/ Four Rooms (anything by/with QT) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113101/ Things to do in Denver when you're dead. (classic Christopher Walken) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114660/ |

A Serious Man
The Graduate Sivaji Oldboy The Dreamers ( pretty much Eva Green naked the whole time :bigtu:) Rescue Dawn Shoot'em up Stalker (1979) - Some people might find this movie boring but I find it pretty brilliant. Anything by Andrei Tarkovsky is pretty much a winner. Funky Forest Blade Runner They Live |
I'm surprised no one has mentioned:
Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. Fight Club (though that's no longer as obscure as it used to be). Seven (another one that's become popular, but easily missed). But if you want really obscure but interesting movies: Tampopo (the first "noodle western") Wings of Desire (great role for Peter Falk) |
I just watched Cell 211 the other night. Spanish, with subtitles, and a damn fine movie.
And then, there's Instinct, with Anthony Hopkins. Seven years in Tibet. Babe - yes, the one with the pig - the first one. Wag the dog As good as it gets Do the right thing, along with pretty much all Spike Lee movies. Avatar, for a tip off the hat to Cameron, for getting 400 million dollars from the man, and laughing at the face of the all the war mongers. Slumdog millionaire Vanishing point Taxi Driver Brazil still tops the list, tho. |
Slumdog Millionaire- very good one.
Avatar? Honestly, I wanted to shoot James Cameron's dog after forcing myself to sit through that predictable, formulaic piece of shit. Very pretty to look at, to be sure. I was trying to figure out where the matte lines were on the CG faces, before I finally learned that there weren't any, because it was all CG. And I respect that. I've never seen human-like faces done in CG so convincingly that I honestly thought it was a composite. But it was still utterly unwatchable. |

X2 for shawshank redemption. My most favorite movie.
2001: A Space Odyssey Donnie Darko. Some think its overrated, but its still a good movie. Watch the directors cut if you're only going to watch it once. It makes more sense on the first viewing than the theatrical version. |
The Professional is one of my guilty pleasure movies.
I hate Val Kilmer except in Tombstone (one of my fave movies of all time). |
Heat...
Pacino, DeNiro, Tom Sizemore, Val Kilmer, And Ashley Judd. |
Run Lola Run
Idiocracy Donnie Darko Super Troopers (I'm glad they never tried a follow-up to this as it was superb and I don't want that ruined) Groundhog Day Operation: Endgame O Brother, Where Art Thau? Cube (the first one only) The Departed Snatch |
+1 Hudsucker Proxy, Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank Redemption (hardly an obscure movie)
It occurs to me that many of the guys here that are younger than me might not have seen some of the better films ever made because they haven't had ready access to them. Many of these are from before my time as well but are excellent and very worth watching. Comedies that should be required: Stir Crazy (w/Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder; "That's right, we bad"), The Jerk (w/Steve Martin; it is where I found my "special purpose") The Longest Yard (1974, Burt Reynolds) The Longest Day (1962, All star cast incl. John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Sean Connery; awesome movie but also should be required viewing for great historical content) Three interestingly linked movies that would be good to see in order to fully appreciate the parallels: Seven Samurai (1954, Japanese w/subtitles; often referred to as the greatest Japanese film ever made), The Magnificent Seven (1960, western based on Seven Samurai; starring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Yul Brenner, Eli Wallach) The Three Amigos (1986, spoof based on The Magnificent Seven; Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short) Young Frankenstein (1974, Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle (from Everybody Loves Raymond), Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr (one of young Elvis' girlfriends). There are others, but this is a great start. |
Assault on Precinct 13 (I prefer the 1976 original but the '05 remake is good too)
Escape 2000 (aka Turkey Shoot) Bottle Rocket The Right Stuff Idiocracy Kick Ass The Manchurian Candidate (the original, not the super-shitty remake) |
How about A Clockwork Orange? Sex and violence, late 60's style. Tame by today's standards, but shocking(and X-rated) at the time. Great film, brilliant satire.
Also, Midnight Cowboy - same vintage, great acting. |
I was reading through the list and was thinking someone has to mention Idiocracy.
Nice to see a few of us were on the same wavelength this morning. Watched Tron last night gearing up to go see the new one. Can't believe that movie is almost 30 years old, though the acting was sure on par for that time frame. :P |
New one got bad reviews but I went and saw it last night and loved it.
|
Vengeance Trilogy:
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (favorite movie) Oldboy Sympathy for Lady Vengeance |
My vote is for Boondock Saints, which has already been said once. In my college years it was my recommendation for "best movie no one has seen".

If you've seen, 'Life is Beautiful', then you may love the actor R. Benini in 'Johnny Stecchino' (Italian - great to read the subtitles since you'd miss the dialog).
Also, +1 for 'Layer Cake'. Very good if you like 'Snatch' and 'Lock, Stock, and 2 Smokin' Barrels'. I think my sort of obscure ones would be: 1) 'Swimming With Sharks' (ultimate dick boss movie with Kevin Spacey) 2) 'Scratch' (documentary on scratching, DJing, etc. FRIGGIN' AMAZING even if you don't really like hiphop) 3) 'Step Into Liquid' (another documentary, but showing different facets of surfing. SOOOO good - even if you've never surfed) 4) 'Happiness' (okay, this is a twisted one...but some funny ass stuff. Especially Jon Lovitz cameo in the opening. Has Philip Seymore Hoffman and a bunch of others) 5) 'Drunken Master' (original w/ Jackie Chan. Great funny kung fu) |
These are all pretty mainstream and should be easy to find.
