Coffee Crew: Who has the best, freshest beans commercially available?
I usually go to Whole Foods and pay $18/lb. I've been trying to find something cheaper that's not 30 minute each way. Am I screwed? I just brewed from a brand new bag of "Peet's" and when I opened it, I smelled nothing...like the beans were roasted six months ago.
|
Haha, that's funny. Peets is great and local, my gf's picky about her coffee, and Peets is her favorite. It's local though, so we probably get much fresher stuff. Go local, that's how you're going to get fresh.
|
Been using my wife's Keruig. Not as cheap or fresh, but good, less than *bucks, and cleanup is great.
As for coffee. This brand is pretty good. We had it at a small bed and breakfast. I see it at the fresh grind isle at HEB. Independence Coffee Company | Coffee & Tea... Revisited | Washington, Texas | Independence Coffee Company they have pre-ground bags also. |

I got all you ladies beat. Local roaster Colorado Coffee Merchants, sold under the Umpire Estate label. Best I've ever had. I ship it to my sister overseas. Drinking a cup of Guatemalan right now. They are picky as hell about beans, won't carry specific varietals unless the beans are up to snuff, and the only decaf roast I have ever thought was good (if that matters to you).
Edit: They date the bags according to when the beans were roasted. Never seen/bought one more than 5 days old, keep it frozen and it's as good as fresh for a couple of weeks. |
I heard this is good:
Ruta Maya Organic Coffee - Ruta Maya Organic Coffee |
you're funny coming here to ask about coffee.
start with this: Home Coffee Roasting Supplies - Sweet Maria's Peet's can be good if you get the right one. I converted my work to get shipped Peet's on a regular basis and it's pretty awesome. You can buy online. We've narrowed down our faves to Espresso Forte and Italian Roast but if you like it FUNKY you can try some of the more African stuff. Do you even know what you like? Do you like funky south American beans or meaty robust African beans or what? |
I bet you'd LOVE Kopi Luwak. It's right up your... uh... alley and price range, baller boy.
|
lol, I take coffee seriously. If I didn't need another set of 6ULs so bad I'd get one of those roasters.

Doesn't hurt that the guys delivers direct to our store every week with fresh bags, and loves to stand around and explain each new bean. Oh, and the 40% discount is pretty nice, too. |
+1 on finding a local roaster. Any decent-sized town will have several. Where I work, we get ours from a company located just a few doors down in the same office park.

Acme Coffee Roasting Co. - Resist Corporate Coffee
Hells yes go local! I love my local coffee guys. I have one of their "Resist Corporate Coffee" stickers on my rollbar. |
I get my coffee from "whats Brewing" here, I found them at the pearl brewery farmers market. Find someone local, and you will be set.

Gourmet Coffee | Best Costa Rican Coffee, Britt Costa Rica coffee Started drinking this stuff around 2000 and never looked back. We get it DHL about two days from ordering. |
+1 on local. Here in Chicagoland it's Intelligentsia, among a dozen others.
I run a Rancillio Silvia with a Gaggia MDF grinder. Good equipment and fresh beans. Buy half pounds and keep tasting until you find something that works for ya. Cheers, -JB |

I have plenty of piss to go around, and I drink manly coffee.
(I work with these guys). https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1353750428 They like their coffee strong, so it is likely that my piss is able to satiate most of the prepubescent urgings for starbucks you fellas have, every time before 1400 I piss, I smell something better than starbucks, and it is a mixture of your mother's pant muffins, and sweet local home brew, filtered through a real man, which you hussies couldn't even begin to imagine. Trey, If you want a sample (of beans, not piss) PM or facebook me your addy, and I will mail you some.... bro. |
Not a huge coffee drinker but Stumptown is the best large roaster here in Portland. some of their grand cru coffees can be pretty interesting
Stumptown Coffee Roasters Otherwise find a local roaster there are many here in portland Ristretto Roasters | Hand Roasted Artisanal Coffee Blue Kangaroo Coffee Roasters - Portland Oregon |
I found a local "christian book store and bean house" that I will not go to, lol.
|
go to your closest farmers market. they will have the locally roasted beenz.
I'm currently digesting a bag of Beanetics from Annandale, VA. I would show you more but their website is broked. http://www.beanetics.com/ I'm pretty sure that's "beanetics" like genetics. Not like dianetics. |

Baltcoffee Coffee & Tea
beans are roasted onsite, usually only days before its shipped, I used to have lunch there with i lived in MD some of the best coffee ive ever had. Ethiopian Harrar | Baltcoffee Coffee & Tea the best coffee hands down. |
If you are a coffee aficionado, then you know that the most prized type of coffee is the peaberry. Trader Joes has Peaberry from different regions about twice a year and sells it for $7.00 a lb, a great bargain. For those times when it's not available they also have a fantastic Brazilian dark roast whole bean that has dark roast cocoa beans mixed in. It has a wonderful smooth flavor with very low acid.

My in laws just got this:
Google Image Result for http://www.briscoes.co.nz/productimages/magnify/1/16966_37697_27011.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1357328963 Had a few cups of different stuff from it. Shocked me how good it was. |
A good coffee maker can make a huge difference as well. Technivorm Moccamaster. Thank me later. Get one, test it against your current machine, and it'll taste worlds better. Good coffee starts with good beans, but is best when made at the proper and consistent brewing temp. Everyone who's been a guest ask what coffee we serve, and I'll never go back to crap coffee makers. Had to buy one for the in-laws when we visit b/c couldn't drink the crap that came out of their old machine. Watch the video for both the testing and the reasoning. They don't just taste test, they figure out the why it tastes better.

Though i might only drink coffee once a week or so, i prefer the dunkin stuff. I drink coffee black too, so i feel my opinion has some validity to it. I also make it in a percolator, only way to go when the french press is not an option. |

Also, no French press, no care. If you're telling me that you french press your coffee every morning 365 days a year then bravo, sir. Somehow I doubt it, but who knows, you are hustler. That McDonalds case reveals the genius/evil of lawyers. They weren't sued b/c their coffee was too hot, they were sued b/c their cup did not inform their customer that it was hot and could cause burns, because most people don't know that. ;) |

Glad we're all on the same page here with the french press.
We all know what happens when we disagree with hustler. |

fuck that french press nonsense. I like my coffee filtered of sediment.
I almost lost my mind drinking coffee in Bali. They grind the beans in a mortar and pestle and then put them in your cup and fill it with hot water. And you drink it. And then you get to the bottom and it's this overextracted slurry of squirty feces. And no it wasn't Kopi Luwak. Plus I don't have a proper burr mill to attain ideal grind size. Anyway... the Brazen I posted above self-calibrates to your altitude to maintain water temp within 1 degree (you can choose brew temp between 190 and 210F). You can also set a pre-soak time to allow the beans to bloom. plus it has an auto timer and thermal carafe. that means coffee at 650am. |

My favorite is a Birmingham local, Royal Cup. their coffee is used by a lot of local gas stations and truck stops, but I'm not sure how far out their distribution goes. I'm pretty sure you can buy it online. It's not top end gormet shit, but for a good quick coffee, it beats anything you can buy in your local chain store by leaps and bounds.
|
I get beans delivered by Tonx. Very very happy with the beans, and you can't beat the convenience.
Good beans are useless without proper coffee prep. Burr grinder (I use a Baratza Virtuoso) gives uniform grind so you don't end up under/overextracting. Water temp is key, do not add boiling water, you want it 195-200Fish. I use a variety of prep -- french press, pourover, aeropress -- but I think the aeropress gives the best results at home. Also, grind size depends on prep style. Coarse for frenchpress & pourover, medium for aero. And don't brew too long. 6 min w/ french press is enough, 4min pourover, 2min with aeropress. |

If I use a French Press on my favorite Trader Joe's Italian Roast coffee, it tastes tarry to me. What am I doing wrong?

Using a blade "grinder" with a french press is probably the most common issue. A burr grinder will get you larger chunks that dont cause problems with the screen and extraction.
Anyone else use an AeroPress ever? I go inverted method. It's solid. Very smooth cup. |
