Well, **** my life. Someone just popped my debit card for $1000 since the 13th. I've been home sick all week so it was rather alarming when my balance was $1k short this afternoon. This is interesting because this is a new account with a new bank. It's literally less than 3 months old. I've never stuck the card info out anywhere on the internets, I transact everything online via paypal and that goes to a completely separate account. This is also not an RFID card. I generally carry cash and I do silly OCD things like use the same ATM at my bank, every time. I use the same gas pump at the same gas station every time I get gas. I buy lunch with my card several times a week but everywhere I go I generally swipe my card myself, at the same register on the same machine, every time. Its that, or can see the person swiping it, the card never leaves my field of view.

My OCD is powerful enough that looking back 2 months into my transaction records, there are exactly 4 times where I have handed my card out of my field of view:
  • The local brewpub (where I'm on a first name basis with the server, he also works at my local Homebrew Shop,)
  • 2 local Sushi restaurants that I've been going to for years (where the faces never change)
  • The Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas - at the restaurant where I took my wife out for dinner on her birthday
I'm not happy with that list.

So... being the vengeful bastard that I am, I've got 4 transactions in 4 different states/counties, and possibly more on the way as 2 were "holds" on the account that I had reported as "stolen/fraud." At lest 3 of these transactions were online so there is a name and a shipping address attached to each of these purchases via an online checkout system. I'll be at the bank tomorrow morning, but its doubtful they will give me any details about anything. I'm going to see if I can social engineer something useful out of them, but they generally have less information than they think they do.

Who exactly investigates and prosecutes these types of things?
