Damn PS3 died again

Alright, so my 2nd PS3 died. Put a disc in, won't do a thing. This is the SAME problem I had on the last one. I take it back to Best Buy and they inform me that Sony has stopped making/has not shipped any 80gigs since x-mas.

What the hell? So I call Sony and they want to send me a refurbished unit.

I don't want a refurbished unit, I paid for a new one. When my PS2 died I got a refurb and the case was all scratched. This damn thing cost me $650 and the best they can do is a refurb?

So I go back to BB and ask about the exhange rules. The only thing they can do is give me a 40 gig + the difference between the two. To get this I need to use my BB warranty which was $80. So I'm spending $80 to downgrade, then another $80 to put a warranty on the new one. I called a local authorized Sony repair shop, they want $125 to fix it.

What the fuck?! I bought my first PS3 in November 07, and this 2nd one is only a month old! Now I'm cornered into a used unit? I am extremely pissed at Sony for this. What the hell are they doing? They stopped the 60 gig, and now the 80 gig. The 60 gig owners are getting shafted into refurbs also.

What should I do? I don't know. I feel cheated that after 3 months I get a used one. Maybe after a year or so, but 3 months? If a refurb is the best they can do this will be the last Sony product I ever purchase.

Few weeks ago Sony discontinued the 80gig PS3 - the one with the half software half hardware backwards compatibilty. So the only one stores are getting now is the 40 gig one wich can't play PS2 titles. There are rumors that Sony will eventually introduce a replacement for the 80 gig one (maybe with a bigger hdd) but it is not clear yet whether that new one would have backwards compatibility or it will be the stripped down version like the 40 gig one (most likely the latter one)

I'd take the refurb and force them to give you a phat warranty.

get the refurb. refrub'd electronics are typically BETTER than new.

I'm on my original, first release model, 360 Premium. Works great. As does my Toshiba HD DVD :fm:

Yeah i had a 360 elite, but then i remember i wasn't in middle school anymore and wanted something that didn't sound like a two stroke when it was on. :magna:
Enjoy your hddvd title, i know i will enjoy my blu ray title(s) oh yes thats cause blu ray won

Ben 01-31-2008 10:45 AM

The newer 360s are pretty much silent when running. The first gen model is a touch loud.

My HD player was $100, came with 9 movies, and makes standard DVDs look bad ass. :fm:

my ps3 has been fine soo far. No problems whatsoever....its been exactly 30 days ive owned it though. (80 gig)

Loki047 01-31-2008 11:01 AM

My blu ray was free with my system came with 5 Blu ray discs and still has discs being made for it.... oh and it makes my normal dvds look badass.

I had the xbox elite in nov. and shit was that loud.

Does anyone know what condition the refurbs are in? The PS2 one I had looked like it was dropped and dragged across the cement. One of the corners was actually ground to an angle. I'm not super ---- about it, but I don't want a shitty looking thing like that again.

y8s 01-31-2008 11:37 AM

fwiw my 60 gig has been fully operational for months. even through day-long game marathons. I think I've crashed it once.

Newbsauce 01-31-2008 11:49 AM

My 60GB is like a damn rock. One time I went to plug something in and shocked the shit out of it with static.. It went off for like.. 10 minutes.. and came back on good as new. BTW.. pixeljunk monsters FTW.

Those were the best but are long gone. Sony are trying to cut corners now, because Nintendo and Microsoft are http://smiliesftw.com/x/bunnabutsecks.gif them on the console market ...

miataspeed1point6 01-31-2008 12:48 PM

Yeah I only had the choice of 40 or 80. I chose the 80 because it had more features, but now that I have owned it for a while I realize I don't actually use them.

UPDATE: I called Best Buy and they said they will completely refund my purchase and warranty. Then I can purchase the 40 gig and then save the difference of $100. Seems like a good way to go for me, I could use the cash and the 40 has all the features I use anyway.

Can I suggest just buying a 60gb off ebay? I think they are the same price. I haven't heard much about them failing.

Last time I checked PS2+PS3 = outselling XBOX/XBOX360.. so its kind of a broad statement to make that Microsoft is sticking it to Sony. Yes, Microsoft is "winning" in the cumulative category (xb360 vs PS3). Analysts predict it will take the PS3 until 2011 to overtake the advantage and market niche Microsoft gained by launching 360 early. Probably sooner when Microsoft beloved HD-DVD is put to rest.

Here is this weeks sales figures:
PS3: 146,742
360: 128,878

In addition, Sony and Nichia (blu-ray laser company) have reduced production costs on blu-ray (finally) and the impact will be seen in the PS3 price I'm sure once sales slow from the current surge.

But if/when it does fail I'm SOL. At least this way I can get it exchanged.

Microsoft came as a nobody in the console market last generation. Look where they are now - developers love them and make games for them. Last time around majority hated Sony but were developing for them because that's where the money were. Now most have the 360 as the main platform and the PS3 is the thing which gets the port so they don't have to touch it much ...

2011 when Nintendo and Microsoft will be having the next generation of their consoles on the market?

You got it wrong here. Microsoft never loved the HD-DVD - they wanted it to fail. They were supporting it only to create chaos on that market. Their ultimate goal is to turn people to download only and have all the movies available on Live. If they wanted to push HD-DVD, 360 would've had that as the main drive a long time ago.

Check the NPD software sales data for December (the last one released, you have to pay for those to take a peek though) - check what money made PS3 titles only (like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank) and compare that to things whose sales are pulled by the X360 and Live like Call of Duty 4 ...

I could tell you more about AAA titles (with $20M+ budgets each) currently being developed and going to market from later this year, to next year and the year after, and how much efforts are being spend on the 360 and how much on the PS3 but I would break some NDA so I won't :)

P.S. I am not a Microsoft employee ... :)

I had 3 of the 60 fail, my 80 is still rock solid.
